Desert Gardens Hotel, Ayers Rock Resort

As many reviewers have noted, this is a VERY expensive place to stay. We were able to access a special rate online and managed to get a rock-view room for $309 per night. That felt like a bargain because we had originally planned to spend more to stay in a much lower quality room. Reception was busy when we checked in, but the desk clerk was very friendly and professional. The Desert Gardens room was quite large. There were double sinks in the bathroom -- nice! The balcony did indeed overlook the rock. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. The amenities in the room were not replenished when the room was cleaned.
Beware -- we made two phone calls, using a prepaid phone card. On checkout, we were charged $9 for each of the calls!

We had a very comfortable stay at Desert Gardens Hotel. We did get a very slight view of the Rock by standing right on the edge of our balcony on a chair. We arrived in the afternoon and were delighted to find a free laundrette. We desperately needed to do some washing and reception hands out free soap powder on request. We were also delighted to see the swimming pool, which was wonderfully cooling and relaxing after a day of travelling. Towels are available and white robes in our room which we wore to the pool. It is possible to eat in any of the hotels on the resort and have it charged to our bill. We chose to eat in the hotel both nights as we thought the food very good and the cost of a bottle of wine fairly reasonable in comparison to City prices in Australia. Our agent had booked our sunrise and sunset tour so we didn't have to do this through the hotel. The shuttle bus to the airport was very efficient. Our bigest gripe was that we had to be out of our room by 10am but the flight wasn't until the afternoon. We had been told that there was a hopitality room but this didn't seem to be available so we had to put our suitcases in a store and change in the toilets.

Room Tip: I think there are very few rooms with a real view of the Rock

This was a great spot to stay in Yulara. The room had plenty of space with 2 seated lounge & sml table & chairs, large modern bathroom and huge balcony with stunning views of Uluru. Was fantastic being able to watch all the colour changes on Uluru from the comfort of our room (as the tempersture was 42c & 43c everyday). The staff were lovely and very helpful in every way. The resort is a great setup and easy to move around the village.

Yulara pupports to offer a variety of accomodation but I'm guessing that by-and-large they're owned by the same people and there's no competiton. Our one night at the Desert Gardens Hotel was adequate, but no more really (although the breakfast is very good indeed, except that they'd run out of any bread other than white by 0915).

We had a "Rock View" room; quite as it said but Yulara is too far away (perhaps 8km) to really make out much detail and a trip to one of the viewing points is probably necessary anyway.

Room OK, bathroom of a poor standard (clean, but the fixtures were the sort of thing my parents had in the 1970s) and all in all no more than adequate.

We stayed in a Rock view room at Desert Gardens recently for 1 night whilst visiting the Rock and Olgas. Reception was frightfully busy with hoards of bus tours and our room was not ready until 3.45pm but we were offered a complimentary drink. We were not really inconvenienced by this but could see how it would be a bother in another circumstance; don't arrive early assuming you'll get an early check-in, even through this off season. Our room was very nicely appointed and had all the amenities we required; we really didn't spend much time in it at all because the sole reason for being there was to enjoy and experience the Rock. We had takeaway noodles from Ayers Wok (seriously) and they were outstanding and very reasonably priced; we were prepared to be rather fleeced but this doesn't necessarily need to be the case. There's also a supermarket to get water and snacks from. So we didn't eat in any of the hotel restaurants so can't comment on their quality but the room was nicely decorated, the bed was very comfortable and I'd recommend it as a base for enjoying the surrounding natural beauty.

An excellent location but the experience of staying at the hotel is ruined by a series of incidents, each of its own almost trivial but in summary show that management needs to be kicked into shape so that staff are properly trained and supervised. Poor cleaning of the rooms, ignorance of tours by front office staff, failure of luggage collection, water points not serviced and so on.
It is a pity that management do not walk the hotel and get to see the obvious shortcomings.
