Sails in the Desert Hotel, Ayers Rock Resort
Ranked #2 of 4 Hotels in Yulara
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 3, 2014

This hotel is the top of the line hotel in this resort - the only resort in Yulara. It is located with ease of access to both Uluru and Kata-Tjuta. A very large hotel with well laid out grounds; and a number of restaurants. The room and bathroom were large and extremely well appointed.
The restaurants seemed very pricey so we had only one meal at their café - Walpa Bar. Food was mediocre but pricey. You would be well served to seek out other dining options away from the hotel.

At $400 for the night the room was as expected- large, spacious, and with a view to die for of Uluru! Finer points were missing like poorly cleaned room (carpet dirty) and simple things like no tissues. TV video function faulty with an answer from the reception that made me think it's been faulty for a while. Overall very pleasant stay and as usual- very comfy bed.

We stayed for 3 nights with another couple and our teenage sons. The hotel is very nice - nice foyer, furnishings, gardens etc. Staff are generally friendly and helpful. If you check in with a group from a flight it's a bit schoolish as a staff member holds guests in line to wait their turn. The double rooms are large, comfortable and clean. Breakfast first day was take away boxes which were really good. Buffet Dinner in the restaurant and breakfast were ok; nothing out of the ordinary for a hotel of this class. Special order stir fries were made incorrectly. Service was a little slow. For dinner, you need to book your preferred time especially if in a bigger group. Free activities were interesting (eg garden walk, weapons talk, dance show). We also played tennis. Hotel is close to town square with IGA and shops. Overall a good stay.

Room Tip: Stayed in 110 & 111 which are ground floor and very close to lobby, pool, restaurant

We have stayed in Sails several times before and the last time, while it was still part of the old Voyages chain, was frankly appalling, including no restaurant open in the evening. Since it has been taken over by the Indigenous Lands Corporation the turnaround is amazing. The refurbishment is a tour de force of interior design and staff attitudes have changed beyond recognition. Well done ILC. But why still use the Voyages trade name which has so many bad connotations?? From being a tired rip off, this has become a five star resort again. Well done.

I stayed here 3 years ago and enjoyed my visit but this time the hotel has improved so much.Firstly it is an Accor hotel now so if you have an Accor card or 2 like we do the savings are wonderful.Secondly it is fantastic to see so many indigenous staff as this was what was missing 3 years ago.I came to the Red centre thinking I was going to have an outback experience 3 years ago but hardly saw an indigenous Australian except on a tour and at the supermarket as shoppers. Now it is great to see all the indigenous staff mostly young people being given opportunities to work in such a unique place.

The rooms are very smart and I just love the peaceful setting. Uluru is one of my favourite all time places to visit so I will be returning it is so spectacular and photos do not do it justice. So visit if you have the chance especially overseas tourists it is so unique and one of Australia`s best tourist destinations.

We stayed here two weeks ago and were amazed how much the staff loved working at the hotel
The young staff in the Resteruant were so helpful as chatty it was a treat to go there for breakfast
The only issue we had was everything had to be done through reception and there was often quite a wait
All the shops are owned by the company and it could be improved by having a better range of gifts even though the shop assistant in the hotel shop was so engaging and full of information to make our stay more enjoyable

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool

Sails in the Desert has been recently renovated and the results are stunning - the rooms are elegant, comfortable and clean. The restaurants are beautiful and the breakfast buffet is truly 5-star. The location is fantastic with an easy drive to the Uluru and Kata Tjuta and a 2 min walk to the Ayers Rock village center with additional restaurants and shops. We loved our stay here and only wished we had had more time. We would definitely go back again.
