Alice Lodge Backpackers

It was one of the better place we have stayed. There were free toast and cereals in the morning for breakfast. Unlimited supply! The double room that we stayed were clean and staff generally helpful. Facilities were adequate and again clean. The gates are locked at night and there are quite a few security cameras on the premises. So beware of eating free cereal at midnight, you'll be caught on CCTV!

Room Tip: The rooms at the back away from the kitchen and reception areas are quieter however they are also fu...

We stayed in Alice Lodge after a six day tour of the outback. We were tired, hungry and needing showers but when we arrived at 3.30pm we were greeted by a sign saying that the reception is closed every day between 1.45pm - 4.30pm so had to sit outside with all of our luggage and wait for over an hour. Whilst sat there without moving I counted 13 signs telling you what you couldn't do. On every available surface there was a sign saying not to sit at a certain bench because they use it for folding washing etc etc etc, which wasn't very welcoming. Finally a young English lad came to reception and didn't seem to want to be there. He checked us in and then told us we would have to come back later if we wanted a WiFi password. A bit later I went back and asked for the WiFi passwords and was made to feel like it was a massive inconvenience to him! The room was clean but pretty basic it just felt very unfriendly and like we weren't welcome. The kitchen, laundry and bathrooms again were clean but basic and full of signs telling you what not to do. The outside is very cluttered and seemed a bit overcrowded. The pool area seemed clean and looked nice but we didn't actually get a chance to use it. Overall the hostel could be very nice if levels of customer service were improved and made to feel more welcoming.

Stayed here before and after our Rock tour and it was wonderful. We stayed in the main hostel and the rooms were clean with plenty of space, lockers and your own fridge which was a bonus. We had beautiful weather so the hammocks and pool were great to relax in. Cody and Rob on reception were both super friendly, helpful and chatty. Free breakfast was good addition too. Plenty of cooking facilities for the size of the hostel. The wall of shame is hilarious and justified in my opinion - hostels that are dirty or where people steal food are no fun. I can't comment on the caravans as I didn't stay in one but I personally had a great stay at Alice lodge, it has great facilities and a lovely relaxed atmosphere.

We chose this backpack hostel because it was one of the cheapest and still not so far from the city center (5min walk). The hostel in itselfs is well decorated, original as well because we slept in a kind of caravan. You can notice that there were some efforts to make it nice. But that was kind of a problem because it was winter and really cold because of the thiness thiness of the walls. The beds were standard. I guess during summer there is plenty to do, but during winter, nothing was organised at the hostel.

About the surroundings... We went for a road trip around the Macdonnel mountains. It is gorgeous! there are so many sites to visit. A lot of history with the aboriginal people. You won't be disapointed. Bare in mind that during winter it is quite cold.
About Alice sprins, there is a reptile center to visit, you'll learn heaps about those animals. The guides are so friendly, it is great for kids as well. In the city center there isn't so much to do, juste enough to find a good restaurant to eat in.

Room Tip: If you travel with a family don't go there, it isn't cumfy enough. But if you are travelling...

Alice Springs is expensive, however Alice Lodge is appalling value for money.
Beds hard with clean(?) but stained sheets, carpet, walls, also badly marked. There is some attempt at cleanliness - but everything - bathrooms, outdoor furniture, kitchen, is grimey.
Concrete fibro board or remodelled caravan - bedrooms are hot and noisy.

Staff very pleasant and create a friendly environment.
30 minute free access to computer with wi-fi was good, as was the muesli for breakfast.

Room Tip: Other side of town?

A short walk from town, includes breakfast, Internet and pool making it good value. The room was a caravan! There are lots of signs/rules everywhere. Personally I found the staff moody and rude combined with there weird wall of shame (photos of guests breaking rules) it generally left a bad feeling. Bit of a shame really, could easily be so much nicer.

G'day Mimsical,

Firstly, please accept my apologies for the moodiness of the staff member in question, he no longers works for Alice Lodge as the job was too much pressure for him. again my apologies and please let me asure you that is not our normal standard.

We have 2 new staff at the hostel and they are a great additional to the team and they are doing a great job, for all you future gues, Cody and Robert will be waiting a reception we a "G'day".

Now with the cameras, as I've written before on other replies, so you should have seen them if you use Tripadvisor for your travels etc, the cameras are there for your safety but also to keep the cleaniness of the hostel up to standard, I personally find it annoying with a guest thinks it acceptable to leave dirty dishes in the kitchen or to not clean after themselves, I noted that you have given us 100% for cleanliness and this is due to the camera presents in the hostel.

I thank you for taking the time to leave a review, personally I am disappointed with the 2 star rating but I can assure you this was an isolated incident as we quickly dealt with the "moody" ex member of staff.

Booked this as partof a tour with Emu Run, and it also included pick up from the airport, which was a fantastic bonus. Very helpful and accomodating with not only luggage storage, but also extra security of laptop and valuables. Very helpful with local knowledge and advice, especially for two "non local" staff members
