“Stay here if you are visiting Alice Springs.”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

I chose to stay at Alice Lodge Backpackers before and after my camping trip to Ayers Rock and it was certainly the right decision. This small and relaxed hostel has many benefits to the budget conscious traveller including free airport pickup, free breakfast, free internet, free lugage storage whilst on tour, it's also quiet, comfortable, fairly clean and a short distance from town.

So...clean hostel, friendly staff, great kitchen open 24 hours, free wi-fi and computers for internet access, free breakfast, common room with loads of videos, lovely garden, swimming pool...what's not to love?! Book tours with them and you'll get discounts on your accommodation (which is already great value for Australia). My only quibble is that the reception shuts at 7pm- they really need someone there in the evenings as well (I would have rated it 5/5 if there had been an evening receptionist).

This a bit smaller hostel is a very comfortable and relaxed place to stay. Free breakfast is good en Free wifi as well. Fridge in every 4 bed dorm. It takes a 5-10 min walk to the shops, supermarkets and bars so when your alone at night, better take a taxi back to the hostel.

My boyfriend stayed here for only one night, but we felt very welcome! If we had more time, we would definately have stayed longer in this hostel. The staff was friendly and the van that we stayed in, in the courtyartd, was very comfortable and clean. The airconditioning worked well fortunately, which you will need in the middle of summer. Anyway, good value, good location, great hostel!

I was happy with my four nights at Alice Lodge Backpackers (plus luggage storage while on tour). The free pick-up service from the station is good, and the four-share dorm rooms, while small, have comfortable beds (that don't creak too much), lockers and a fridge - good value for $24 per night. There's not much room for suitcases etc, but with a little juggling, it's OK.

I was worried that I would be kept awake by music playing and people talking at night, but the music was switched off by 9 pm and people were quiet after that. They were also quiet and considerate coming into the room, leaving the light switched off, etc. I was also worried about it being too hot - it seemed that the airconditioning was turned off around midnight, but there are windows that can be opened and a fan in the room as well, so it wasn't too bad. The quilt/doona/duvet was adequate for the cool nights as well.

The place is well organied and the staff are friendly and efficient. Everything is easy to find. The shower and toilet areas get a bit dirty as the day goes on, but are cleaned daily. The kitchen is small and gets crowded in the evening, and could be cleaner, but there are lots of people using it, so it's difficult to keep super clean, like the showers and toilets. I found the pictures from the video surveyance camera (in the kitchen) of people "stealing" food etc, amusing, and didn't mind it.

The place is secure at night; the gate is locked and there is a code for unlocking it. It's a short walk into town and I felt completely safe walking to and from town at night, even though it's in a quiet area.

My only complaint is there was only one thin pillow per bed - two thin pillows per bed would be better to give people choice of how thick or thin they like their pillow.

Suzanne :)
