A Good Rest B&B
Reviewed December 4, 2013 via mobile

Margaret and Alf are great hosts and make you feel welcome in their home which is beautiful with the best aboriginal art that we saw on our trip to the center. This was also the nicest place we stayed between Ayers Rock, Kings Canyon, Glen Helen and Alice Springs. We stayed in the Villa which is large with ensuite, kitchen and laundry..very welcome after 4 days hiking in the hot center. Margaret made is a wonderful meal of spaghetti bolonese with very fresh ingredients as well as a curry chicken all served in the dining room with accompanying wine and pre dinner nibles . It was a memorable evening as if we were among friends. IT IS TRULY A 5 STAR EXPERIENCE.

Looking at all the glowing reviews on this page, I can't help thinking we were just downright unlucky in hitting A Good Rest on a bad day. Despite the obvious goodwill on the part of Margaret and Alf, there was a lot of confusion surrounding our visit, our hosts didn't return to the house when they said they were going to (leaving us to wander the suburban streets - the B & B is well out of the town centre - in search of a place to eat), and then they overslept in the morning when we'd been promised an early breakfast ahead of an early start. Our host also took it upon herself to contact our tour company and get into an argument with them - which we had not asked her to do.

We were booked in for two nights (separated by three days) and returned fearing the worst. However, second time around, things went much more smoothly. We were certainly very grateful to be picked up from the Ghan, and for a lift into town, since, although there is a bus service which drops you about 250 metres away, it made life a lot easier. The place is clean - and kept that way by Margaret, who puts a heavy plastic sheet onto the double bed.

Overall, a very mixed experience, but Margaret and Alf obviously have good intentions, and were very apologetic for the various mistakes and muddles.

It is very, very disappointing that you did not enjoy your stay as we pride ourselves in giving our best to our guests and ensure they enjoy their stay, we do offer a lot more service than is required and this is reflected through our guests comments.

We had a wonderful stay with Margaret and Alf on the last night of our trip through Central Australia. We could not have stayed at a better B&B before the flight home. They were hospitable to an unbelievable degree as they shared their home with us. Their willingness to help us return our rental vehicle, and the welcoming wine and nibbles were greatly appreciated. Their B&B is beautiful. Our room was immaculate, and a hearty breakfast was a perfect way to start the day. A great B&B and fantastic hosts.

We knew that we would be in good hands when we started exchanging emails with Margaret, months prior to our visit. It was clear that she would do anything & everything to accommodate our needs. At one point (months prior to our arrival), we considered changing our itinerary and bypassing Alice, but in all honesty, Margaret had been so kind and so helpful, that we decided we HAD to go to Alice. She also kindly mailed us a pamphlet (costing several AUD to mail to us in the USA!) describing the sights and highlights of Alice.

We stayed in The Villa - a freestanding apartment...WOW! It was absolutely gorgeous, spotless, and had every amenity we could imagine. Truly one of the nicest places we've ever stayed.

We arrived in the evening, and Margaret and Alf immediately offered us wine and some light snacks, which were much appreciated after the long bus ride from Uluru. She then took our order for the full, cooked-to-order breakfast for the following morning (we were stuffed!). She graciously accommodated my husband's need for gluten free foods.

We were there on Anzac Day (somewhat similar to the USA's Memorial Day--but more properly observed) a day on which a huge Australian Rules Football Game is played. Alf invited us to watch the game on their mega-screen TV in the main house, and gave my husband a primer on the rules of the game.

Margaret and Alf recommended and made a dinner reservation for us (at the top-rated restaurant in TripAdvisor!), and we received VIP treatment from the manager.

A Good Rest is in a residential neighborhood. As I recall, the cost of staying in The Villa was a bit more expensive, compared with other places in Alice. However, many of those seemed to have inconsistent (and not particularly good) reviews, so we opted for the place that had consistently good reviews. It was definitely worth the extra expense, especially considering the huge & delicious breakfast that is provided...and we wanted to have kitchen facilities.

Margaret & Alf are very proud of the region surrounding Alice, and gave us excellent suggestions for sightseeing. Many thanks to both of them for a wonderful stay.

Room Tip: The Villa was outstanding, and offered more privacy.

Margaret and Alf went out of their way to make my family's short stay in Alice a good one. It may have rained through much of our stay but I will always have good memories of the villa, which was clean and comfortable. I highly recommend staying here.

This is a lovely, cozy B&B. The walls display fine Aboriginal art, flower arrangements are interesting and well proportioned, and fresh roses from the garden are about. Of course A Good Rest is spotlessly clean, the towels huge and fluffy and the sheets ironed, yet there is so much more. The back yard is a haven of grass, garden, and cozy shaded sitting areas, lit with fairy lights at night. There is a even a pool. Yet these things are not what makes this an extraordinary B&B.
If there is such a thing, Margaret and Alf are natural-born B&B owners. If they ever want a change from running their own, they can open a school for prospective B&B owners and it will be Ivy League. Talking to Margaret is like talking to an old friend, and she is able and willing to go above and beyond in making your stay comfortable. She and Alf are free and easy with information and chat. We got to talking and ended up going out to dinner with them, because it's just that easy to be around them. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed in a bedroom in the house. However, there is a private villa out back.

We had a wonderful stay at this very well run and hospitable B &B. Immaculately clean, great breakfast, with nibbles and wine in the evening. Alf and Margaret are great hosts and really go out of their way for their guests. We were treated more like friends than customers. We stayed in the house (rather than the villa). Room was great with fresh flowers and ironed sheets! The bathroom was huge with a spa. There is a swimming pool and a wonderful patio with a gazebo in the back.. We were given excellent advice about restaurants and sites in the area. It is in a quiet part of town and not far from the city centre.
