“Excellent escape”
Reviewed January 21, 2013

The bungalows are well maintained and decorated, the people working there are lovely, the food is good, and it is a great jumping off point to get into the Kakadu. If I ever go back up to this part of the world, I will not hesitate to stay here again. There are no TVs, alarms, radios, etc in the bungalows, so it's a real opportunity to completely disconnect. I got through the better part of a large book I've been reading while we stayed here for three nights. The pool is a welcome refresher when it's hot outside. We stayed in a poolside bungalow, and it was a great decision. The only minor complaint was that the beds were not super comfortable.

Room Tip: spend the extra cash on a poolside bungalow. They were recently renovated.

My partner and I stayed at the retreat for two nights. It was bliss! All we did was sleep, laze in the pool, have a few drinks and chill out.
There is no internet/phone coverage, no TV's in the rooms, no clocks... It is literally 'back to nature' and somewhere quiet to relax and recouperrate. We were upgraded (complimentary) to a deluxe room. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was nice, and shower was great.
We were overlooking a lovely little pool and it was so relaxing lazing in it with a glass of wine. The grounds are vast and it was fab watching the wallabies grazing in the grounds. The food in the restaurant was lovely, but is only open 6-8pm. They dont invite boozy nights (hence 'retreat') and the staff were friendly and couldnt do enough for us.
We hired a boat (from the retreat, $70 an hour, $15 per hour thereafter) and relaxed on the Mary River, fishing and spotting crocs. It truly was lovely. The jumping croc cruises are only about 20-25mins away from the retreat.
This is such a great place if you want to spend some quality time with your partner, or just relax with friends. My mum is coming out from the UK next year and I plan on returning with her so she can get over jetlag!

Room Tip: We were upgraded to the deluxe room overlooking a small quiet pool, but most of the budget rooms hav...

Our cottage was very pleasant -- clean, sufficiently spacious and quiet. The grounds were well-kept and we enjoyed the small pool. The internet was reasonably fast and free. The restaurant was OK but there weren't many choices on the menu. We appreciated the hiking trails on their property and spent a few hours looking at wildlife. Front desk staff was very friendly and welcoming.
There are some river cruises in the area for spotting wildlife and birds, but I would not recommend the river cruise conducted by the hotel staff. Our tour guide was new and didn't know the names of any of the birds -- she drove the boat and was pleasant, but wasn't able to help us become familiar with the local wildlife, which is the reason we took the cruise.

Room Tip: Choose a cottage adjacent the pool.

We spent our first night in the Territory here and no where else (accommodation wise) quite compared as far as ambience goes. The grounds were spacious and lush with plenty of wild life. The staff made us feel more like family than tourists. The pool bungalow we stayed in was very simple but tastefully decorated. I loved the big walk in shower. I would definitely come back.

Staying at this venue takes you to another world. If like me, you are expecting all the things like home, don't. Having said that once you get used to the fact that it is a retreat by name and by nature the stay is excellent. No TVs or clock radios just peace and quite. The cabins are spacious and comfortable and the beds are great. The breakfast is continental and the restaurant in the evening is excellent. Hats off to the owners as reports from a year or so ago were very bad but the place is well run and from the time of checkin to checkout the staff are polite.

Smelling freshly wet monsoon forest. Watching dancing dragon flies. No misquitos or flies. Veranda facing grassy garden. No teaspoons but who cares. Delish and filling mixed grill $25. Imacculately clean cabin. Kangaroos in garden infront it you. No cooked brekky but available inBarkly Hut. Licensed though. Saw cantoad. They have snappy the baby croc in tank. And a snake in a tank in dining area. Cabin well air con and also fan if needed. Cost $130 per night or $117 per night if book 2 oror nights. Has swimming pool. Great drinking decks 2 of them.

No Telstra mobile coverage though. So great if you want to get away from it all.Though there is slowish free satellite based Internet availalbe near the lobby. No TV in the rooms but there are power points to keep your portable devices charged up for later (like digital cameras)! Definitely recommend day trip to Litchfiel NP. Free entry (compared with $25 for Kakadu) and towering termite mounds, magnificent water falls that you can swim at at Florence Falls and Wangi Falls. All on sealed roads. But best swimming spot is Buley Rockpools. I spent 4 1/2 hrs there and didn't even realise it. Laze in the rock pools with cascading mini falls - natures own free spa!!! Check out the insect eating red miniature red plants on the banks. Full up at United - cheapest fuel around - humpy do or nounamah.

But get there before 8pm to eat in the restaurant. The outdoor patio areas are excellent for sipping beers on a balmy nites :)

Well worth it - would like to come back here again if I ever get back to Darwin again!

Room Tip: Get Cabins 11, 12 or 13 as they have concrete paths right to their door (for roll on baggage) and th...

We stayed in late June for two nights camping. Well grassed camping area and a pristine camp kitchen. Bathrooms very clean but could do with a few more. Went back a month later for a night in an excellent cabin and reasonably priced. For both stays we enjoyed very good fish in the restaurant. Our hosts were very attentive and particularly helpful with information about local birds.
