“Great taste of Greece in Sydney”
Reviewed January 14, 2014

We felt like a Greek meal with friends, and selected the Athenian as the location suited us and on the web it sounded like a good menu at reasonable prices.

The restaurant is in a grand former bank building close to Martin Place in the centre of Sydney.

It is large, with extensive seating in a formal style, and on a quiet Monday evening, slightly intimidating. Having said that, Mondays are usually quiet for restaurants, and we were pleased it was open.

We were not disappointed. The food was excellent, and the waiter friendly and helpful. We couldn't decide what to have, and were thinking we might share dishes, so he offered to come up with some choices for us and we were happy to go with the flow. The moussaka, beef stifado and roast lamb were all great selections, delicious indeed, especially the beef and the lamb.

I squeezed in some baklava with gelato as well, which rounded off the meal beautifully.

I would go again, the some of the dishes were exceptional, and the prices very reasonable.

“Rubbish Service, Great food”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

Not exactly a cosy venue and felt a little like the dining area of a holiday camp. The order was taken and drinks and starters came in reasonable time. 45 minutes later, the waiter informed us there was no more lamb and our friend had to change the order. The waiter was not very apologetic and didn't seem to care that we would now have to wait a further 20 minutes. When the food eventually arrived, it was very good and couldn't fault them - I had the swordfish which i could definitely recommend. During the meal, not once did the waiter didn't come to our table so we ordered some water from the bar. Great food, but the service was terrible and will not be giving them my business again.

“Authentic Greek Restaurant”
Reviewed December 26, 2013

We dined at this restaurant mid week in November as part of a group of 8. The restaurant was recommended by one of our group who had eaten here many times in the past (the rest of our group were from interstate so this was our first time here). The waiters were friendly and the services was very good through out the evening. There weren't many patrons in the restaurant,so the place was very quiet (except for our group) which contributed to a lack of atmosphere, although I'm sure when it is busy the restaurant has a different feel to it. Food was reasonably priced and everyone in our group commented on the quality of their meals. We shared a selection of entrees which included haloumi cheese, calamari, tzatziki and taramosalata. For main course the roasted greek lamb was the popular dish, although a couple tried the prawns saganaki. Couldn't fault the food, it was extremely good. The wine list offers a range of Greek wines as well as a good selection of Australian wines, which are reasonably priced.Overall our group had an enjoyable evening, some excellent Greek food and actually good value for money.

“It's good value for money, and what a setting!”
Reviewed December 25, 2013

For starters, it's is SO conveniently located between George Street (at Martin Place) and York Street, so you can't get much more central than that in the city. The restaurant is housed in what used to be a bank, so if the high ceilings and the marble columns at the entrance don't get you in, the huge vaults below ground, where the toilets are located (except the ground floor one for disabled patrons) certainly will. The Greek waiters have gone high-tech, meaning that they use their I-pads to transmit your orders to the kitchen. They're friendly in that familiar Greek way, genuinely welcoming and efficient. The place attracts a lot of businesspeople, hence round tables for 4-14, and the noise can be animated but not overpowering. So the ambience is genuine and positive.

But you go there for the food, and it doesn't disappoint. I've read recent reviews and must say I don't agree with the more critical of them, having visited Greece on 29 occasions for periods of three to six weeks, most recently in August this year. I know my Greek food, and the Athenian's fare is the genuine product. The food list is extensive, and includes all the classics, including Moussaka, Calamari, Spanokopites, Tiropites, Greek Salad, and a huge variety of meat, chicken, fish and vegetarian dishes. The wine list is very impressive, and the modest prices even more so. My stuffed capsicum was superb; the others in my party enjoyed their fish and lemon lamb ("Arni Stifato"). The service was competent and not snappy, the waiter obviously enjoys interacting with his guests and the food volumes almost embarassingly large. Definitely good value for money and a place worth visiting for a genuine Greek meal.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed December 23, 2013

This was a good place for a reunion of six old friends because it was very quiet, indeed one would have to observe that two nights before Xmas it was very poorly patronised, which may say something. I didn't care for my vegetarian dish (stuffed capsicums etc.) and didn't finish it, because it was cooked to a sludge. From what I could observe of the other five dishes, they looked pretty mediocre but everyone else seemed satisfied. We'd had dinner with old Greek friends at a Greek restaurant in Melbourne the week before, and there was no basis for comparison (the food in the Melbourne restaurant was streets ahead)
