Great view and food. In addition, we turned up really late and they worked around us, they were very accommodating.

“An average experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2013

A fine dining experience usually needs 3 things to make it complete : delicious food, nice ambience & good service. Cafe Sydney can tick off the 1st two but they need to up their level of service - if they want to be a great dining experience. At $150 a head (which is what we spent) & my 3rd visit - Expectations were high & the service let us down. There are many waiting staff running around looking busy but not many seemed to be trained well. Perhaps its the use of foreign European staff that could do with a little more training in English - like the waiter who brought our entrees and asked who had ordered the scallops; we said no one had ordered scallops but on closer inspection of the dish - it was in fact calamari which one of us did order. On discovering his error - a brusque comment "I am French" was simply made which kind of left us flabbergasted. As simple laugh/joke and sorry would hv been much more appreciated! He just plonked the dish down and walked away. We ended up all laughing! Another example - like the waiter who had to be told to change our glasses when we ordered a second bottle of wine. Like the waitress who poured wine without asking if a top up was required & offering one of us a mocktail when the person didn't want a top up (after the top up already was made) & not noticing that the person already had a non alcoholic soft drink. Like having to request the table be cleaned after our seafood platter (shells and sauce left/dripped on the table). The list goes on - mostly little things which in a restaurant such as this should not happen. You are paying top dollar & getting served by inexperienced staff. I am being picky but compared to my previous 2 visits - it's obvious the new management isn't training staff properly before letting them loose on the floor.

The ambience & views are stunning and the food cannot be faulted. All delicious but with prices to match. Would I go again? Probably if I had out of town visitors who want to be wowed by the views. Perhaps drinks would be a better option. For the prices paid, I would go to a Merivale restaurant anytime - service is always spot on (& they do hv lots of foreign European staff too) and you kind of feel they hv justified their high prices because as a customer, you do feel special. When we left Cafe Sydney after our meal - not a single staff (including those who served us and presented our bill etc) we passed on the way out acknowledged us (much less said thank you!). I regretted leaving the tip!

“Loved it.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2013

Great restaurant. Quite dark inside with candles and low lighting so you feel relaxed instantly. We sat outside even though it was winter, but because they provide you with rugs and heaters the temperature was perfect. Service was spot on and food was great. Enjoyed prawns, clams, mussels, swordfish, bread, a couple of bottles of wine and a local beer. Couldn't complain about anything!
TIP: Book the outside tables with a view over the harbour bridge.
