“Fine dining in historic setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

This hotel is Sydney's oldest continually licensed hotel. A charming English pub-like atmosphere with an excellent menu and ambiance. The beautiful old hand cut sandstone walls and large beam ceiling add such a sense of history. Don't bother coming if you want to drink VB or equivalent, it’s a brewery with some excellent in-house brews. Also quite a good wine list for those who prefer a grape variety. The menu, although not extensive, had a good choice of meals and our group had the fish, sausages, Nepalese curry and finally the chilli crab pasta. All meals were excellent. A great place for lunch in a warm cosy environment in front of the fireplace with friends. Could not think of a better way to spend a cold wet Sydney weekend.

“Great Recruitment Policy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

This is a great location in the Rocks within easy reach of Circular Quay. The place looks great and has a long heritage as Australia's longest continuous licensed premises. The ambience is buzzing and the beer, brewed on site is excellent. We ate upstairs and the food was fantastic and the service very good - all of the barmaids and waitresses a absolutely stunning!

“Good food and beer at decent prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

Writing as a Pom away from home this has the feel of a decent English pub and it does good food at decent prices.

I just had the pie, mash and mushy peas ($14) with a pint and it must have gone down in about 3 minutes flat - fantastic.

Great place for travels/business types to sit back and read the papers over a beer and late dinner (food is on until 10.00pm most week days) - loved it.

“Ahoy mateys! Unique experience ahead!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

Depending on who you talk to....the oldest pub in Australia. Regardless, it has class, character, and to die for pub food. A hard combination to beat! Attacts locals as well as us tourists (major points.) I didn't realize it was a hotel as well or would have stayed here for proximity to good food and beer. I'll know next time. Anyway, got great (times two) meat pie...see attached picture. And had to have not one...not two...but three pints of beer to make sure I got the best one. The material posted around the pub is museum quality. Common on...Spice the Main Brace, Won/Won/Won, Nelson's Blood. Who knows those stories? What an experience! A must see in Sydney.

“Great meal, great service, great venue, great location!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

This restaurant continues to impress. While the menu hasn't change much over the years we've been going there, the food is consistently very good and the service very friendly (but not too much so) and efficient (as opposed to officious). The restaurant is located upstairs (away from the noisy bar crowd) in a classic, historic hotel in The Rocks and is great for either a pre-theatre dinner or a longer lazy meal. The wine list is pretty good too. The sandstone walls add to what is already an interesting ambience, and the full restaurant (by 7.00pm on a Friday night) attests to just how good this place is. It's a little hard to find (and you have to enter through the rowdy bar crowd) but it is most certainly worth the effort.
