“Excellent food, worth it for the view”

This restaurant is right on the harbor and has a wonderful view. Long, interesting menu, and everything we had was excellent. Seemed like it would be a great place to get together a group of people.

“The best, always”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2014 credit card Amex Card Member Review

I have been eating at the Malaya since it was laminited tables and plastic glasses down near Central Station. When it moved upmarket to King Street Wharf, I was worried it would lose 'it'. It never has.
The food is, as always, brilliant. Simple, tasty and spicy. My all-time favourite, otak otak, is a smokey, chilli and spice laden piece of minced fish grilled in a leaf. The rendangs and curries are all standards, but consistently well executed and always delicious.
The service seems to get better and better. I originally booked for a group of 14, but when only 8 turned up, there was no problem at all. We were even told that now we had less than 10, we didn't have to stick to the banquet menu.
The only downside for me, and not the restaurant's fault, is the scenery. If you like looking at enormous casinos, modern dreary public design buildings and faux river steam boats, I suppose it's alright. Try to be there as the sun goes down - the architecture almost looks stylish.
The best. Always was, still is.

“Hard to duplicate”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2014

We had the vegetarian tasting menu for lunch at The Malaya which ran about $55 per person. It was wonderful. The service was superb. They just kept bringing out a diverse variety of South East Asian cuisine that I never experienced before. The crunchy, Szechuan eggplant was most memorable. We had enough to takeaway for another meal. The wine list was very good although we ordered the Napoleon Cider. We had a view of Darling Harbor from our table. The atmosphere was lively and busy. They close for a few hours between lunch and dinner so you need to arrive by 2:30 for lunch.

“Gorgeous food and great view”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2014

I love Malaysian food and fortunately I was able to go to The Malaya. The food here is truly outstanding. The Mee Goreng, Nasi Goreng, the Beef rendang, Szechuan chicken and the honey soy prawns were cooked to perfection. The view was spectacular and the service was exemplary. I love the Malaya!
