Went to the Malaya on KIngs St Wharf last week. Can simply summarise it as "perfectly nice". Nice location, good service, nice food. However, not great food (which I remember the Malaya having some years back) and somewhat pricey. A restaurant to take overseas visitors or guests..perhaps.

Have not eaten anywhere in Sydney that offers such consistent quality incredible food. So much flavour, absolutely perfect every time.

We have a bit of a set menu which I order all the time in various quantities. The vegetarian sang choi bau, the vege/king prawn laksa, the roti canai, the capitan chicken, the coconut beef rendang, the salt and pepper prawns, followed by some little petit fours because too full for big dessert. Everything is perfectly executed, every time. As a former vegetarian, it was the first place I went and felt I wasn't missing out (salt and pepper cauliflower arguably as good as the prawns).

Whether in a big group or just the two of us, always find the wait staff very attentive and experienced, predicting just when you need another bottle opened. Almost smacked one once that tried to take away the laksa before we were done, for which I blame the deliciousness of the laksa.

To be fair, some dishes weren't as good, some of the noodly ones for instance were nothing special. But choose right and you won't be disappointed.

Apart from the great food and views, the ambience is wonderful - there is a real buzz about the place. Service is professional but friendly. Would I go back there or recommend to friends? Most definitely.

In the early 80s we went to The Malaya when it was a cheap student eating house near Central Station. The food was inexpensive and fantastic. Now located with harbour views at Darling Harbour, The Malaya is another place altogether. It is large, airy, not so cheap, but still serves delicious food.

We enjoyed entrees of crab sang chow bow and light pastry rolls filled with prawns. Next time I'd be happy enough to have the usual pork mince sang chow bow as, for the extra money, the crab was not really distinguishable. We thought that a request for two additional lettuce leaves attracting a cost of 50 cents a leaf, was poor form.

Our mains were beef rendang, lamb korma and beans and sprouts with plain rice. The meat dishes were delicious; the vegetable dish was okay.

The dessert of citrus tarts was tiny - about the size of tiny petite fours which would normally be served free with tea or coffee. The black rice with coconut cream and fruit was attractively presented and tasty.

The wine list is extensive. The service is excellent. It was an enjoyable night.

A classic Sydney restaurant-great curries from original malaysian recipes. Service is great very busy ambience and on the high side of the $$$ spectrum -but it never dissapoints .
