Description: Almond Bar is an award winning restaurant operating since 2007. It serves authentic, as well as modern Middle Eastern dishes, delicious cocktails and a diverse range of wines in a very friendly and comfortable environment. It all started with a dream that owner Carol Salloum had of bringing her family's love of food & people together for all of Sydney to enjoy. She approached her great cook of a sister Sharon and the rest is history. Carol & Sharon, as well as their two brothers George & Steven, grew up in a traditional Syrian household where hospitality was their life. It started the moment an unexpected guest entered their home. No matter what the circumstances or financial situation of their parents, they taught their children to be hospitable & always welcome those that came to their door. Hospitality is in their blood, not just a job. The Salloum household regularly had a container filled with mixed nuts - amongst many other snacks - for the visitors that would drop in for a coffee or drink. Each of the four siblings would secretly open the container and eat the almonds until there were none left. All seemed to get away with it & no one ever owned up. Everyone at Almond Bar has always tried to make all their customers feel at home & experience the passion that they have. The family is always involved and customers have become family too. Sharon Salloum has produced an International Gourmand Award for Best Cook Book by Female as well as Best Middle Eastern Cook Book. Her passion for her food and culture are evident in her cooking, her classes & the tours she runs for Gourmet Safari. Carol and Sharon, along with an amazing team are currently working to educate and train Syrian refugees; to find employment for them; and help them feel welcome in the country that they & their family call home.

Booked to eat here for my sister's birthday, went with a group of 5 on a Saturday night.

When we arrived the place was bustling - good thing we booked a table! We were greeted warmly by the staff and seated immediately. The tables are small and cosy, surrounded by little stools. No big comfy couches here!

From the moment we sat we were looked after attentively by the staff... told stories about the water bottles (you have to see them to understand), the food and the restaurant. Even though they were busy they seemed to have all the time in the world to make sure we felt special.

Started ordering food, and when it arrived we knew we were in heaven. It's different and delicious. Everything that came out was met with a groan of delight - simply amazing food.

To top it off, the staff had realised that we were there for a birthday and came out with a sweet dish singing a very lively happy birthday song - great fun!

Can't recommend highly enough.

This little place is a amazing, small with just 11 tables but a great atmosphere & the food is just amazing.
We had a meat deal which consisted of a few different courses & dips. It was all very tasty.
It was my partners birthday so he was presented with a 'happy birthday song' to his horror hee hee. They were very good & the staff were lovely.
One of the sisters who owns this places came to talk to us, a very lovely & humble lady.
Will definitely return & with friends.
For good food you have to try it.

We LOVE Almond Bar ! From the cosy decor with brilliant use of the tiny space to the snug atmosphere, friendly service & brilliant food - Almond Bar is a must for us each time we visit Sydney, no matter where we're staying. We also like their ethics & community involvement. This was our 4th visit, and every time has been a memorable experience. Since our first taste of this scrumptious fare we've introduced it to friends in Sydney and try to meet up with them there annually.

This time we began with fried cauliflower entree, which is so much yummier than it sounds, followed by slow-cooked beef shin and the chef's Syrian duck. Both were delicious, but the duck with it's jewel-like bursts of pomegranate seeds was also a thing of beauty ! The staff always find time for a chat and are interested in hearing your story. They can be sure ours will include many happy returns (◡‿◡✿)

Our first visit was after watching an episode of World Food Safari which featured this great little restaurant bar and we have now been back 4 times! The Syrian owners are very welcoming and always remember us. A small tray of different flavoured almonds is already on the table to nibble on while you peruse the menu. You must book ahead as the place completely packs out and there are 2 nightly seatings to choose from. I recommend the later one so that you can take your time. Cocktails are great and there is a good selection of old and new world wines to choose from. Now, down to the food. If you are not familiar with Syrian food (as we were't previously), it is very similiar to Lebanese. We have now tried most dishes on the menu and the highlights for us are the dips, the calamari which simply melts in your mouth, salads and the cauliflower is an absolute must. My husband loves the raw lamb, although I must confess, this is not for me! There is the option of a very impressive looking 3 tiered platter for 2, with a good selection from the menu, although we prefer to pick and choose. Desserts are wonderful for those with a sweet tooth and include an unusual Lebanese icecream made by a woman dessert artisan in Sydney (which we had been lucky enough to try previously on a World Food Safar tour). Coffee and Arak are a must to finish with! The family run restaurant have great attention to detail. Water glasses are replenished regularly from very groovy water jugs. Food and drinks arrive prompty. We love the ambience and decor and Carol, part owner and (floor manager?) ensures all guests are looked after well. The tables are small, diners are packed in and it's noisy. If you are looking for a quiet, intimate place for a romantic dinner, the Almond Bar is not the place for you. If you love great food, drinks and service I can highly recommend it. We will certainly be back again.
