A trip to Sydney would be incomplete without dinner at De Vine. It's one of my favourite restaurants. De Vine operates as a wine bar, bistro with bar food, and restaurant proper. It’s been described as Italian, whereas I would consider it eclectic with an Italian influence. The focus of De Vine is the wine. The wine list comprises an extensive range of quality wines from the premier districts of France, Italy, Germany, Austria and Spain, as well as wines from Australia and New Zealand. Quite a number of varietals are represented, both well known and less so. Owners Andreas and Terence have an equally extensive knowledge of their wines, which they are happy to pass on. The wine list changes regularly as they source new wines. The food menu is not as extensive, but very good quality nonetheless and there is plenty to satisfy all tastes and match the wine. De Vine is a restaurant where I choose the wine first and then see what food will match. Andreas, Terence and the team are most helpful with advice. There is also plenty of wine by the glass so you can match each course. The wine can be expensive, the focus is on quality European wines, but this is compensated by reasonably price the food by Sydney standards. I’ve much more for much less quality in Darling Harbour and the Rocks. The desserts are excellent and there is a good range of cheese and ports, whiskies, Cognac and Armagnac etc. The service is prompt and attentive.
