It is hard to find a really good Yum Cha in Chinatown where the trolleys come around with tasty offerings. The trend these days is that you are given a menu to choose which dumpling you wish to order - not so at Marigold. The good fun of choosing from an array of tasty samples is alive and well giving the guests not only the opportunity to spend some time over their selection but also to see the full selection on offer. The holistic Yum Cha experience is certainly appreciated by this family of young & old.

Very Tasty food, quick service. Not one of us was disappointed with any of the dishes that we chose. Was busy compared to alot of the other restaurants in China Town which was a very good indication of the quality of the food and service. Enjoy.

We visited for Valentine's Day lunch after having (a) visited Hong Kong in January and enjoyed the Yum Cha trolley service (b) read the great reviews on here.

First things first - we arrived early for lunch (1145am) which is well worth doing - as the huge dining room was completely full by 1230.

The 5th floor room is a huge size (maybe 500 covers?) and traditionally decorated (including huge chandeliers) creating a great buzz throughout the restaurant and the trolley service is very efficient - trolleys constantly bringing new delicious dishes.

Second TOP TIP here is be patient - the trolleys come round constantly and if you fill up too early something else delicious may come out later.

We enjoyed prawn dumplings (traditional steamed hau gar and also a wonton style served on a plate with dipping sauce), roast BBQ pork meat, fabulous noodles, and a huge huge plate of deep fried squid. This was all as good dim sum as we have ever tasted anywhere in the world.

The only dish that detracted from 5* review was the gai lag - which was cooked in front of us - although was very oily when it arrived - was it braised in oil.

That said service was good and efficient - although as often with dim sum not as warm as it could be - and all in all good value for money at $60 for lunch including delicious jasmine tea.

We'll be back, would recommend - so do come early and be patient!

It is great to be able to visit two Yum Cha restaurants in a week to provide a basis for comparison. My friends and I were at Marigold early on a Saturday morning. If you don't arrive early, just be prepared to queue.

Unlike the other restaurant I visited earlier in the week, Marigold's trolleys were coming around on a regular basis and there were ample choices. I am not sure if this is due to the weekends. Nevertheless, the dumplings were a good size and one could taste the various morsels that maketh a dumpling.

This restaurant was a buzz with customers and the waiters were going around filling up pots of tea. They were busy as they had a table with Barry O'Farrell and other politicians and the customers were also treated to a lion dance performance being Chinese New Year.

However, after a good run of dumpling dishes, it was a real let down when we wanted to get some egg tarts. After asking about 6 staff, no one could attend to our request. One said, 'you do not ask for the egg custard from me...look for the trolley'. Trolley after trolley came and went but alas, no egg tart. We even went round trying to look for the trolleys with the egg tart. Just goes to show how desperate we were. In the end, we had to go "chasing" after this lady who was carrying a tray full of freshly made egg tarts.

After the waiting (which would have been a good 1 hr) and thankfully we were not shoo-ed out we were finally ready to take our leave.

Not reasonably priced, expect around $25 per head but the variety and taste makes up for it ie. if you have a craving for yum cha.
