Description: Longrain Sydney is located at 85 Commonwealth St in Surry Hills. Inspired by the communal eating philosophy of the Asian table, our menu is made up of dishes created for sharing. Longrain's menu has evolved from Martin Boetz's original Longrain vision, bringing South East Asian influences to carefully sourced ingredients with fresh, zingy flavours. His vibrant menu is carefully balanced with wines and cocktails chosen by restaurateur Sam Christie. Our long, shared tables encourage the spirit of eating together, so you can try each dish as part of a full tasting experience, just as it was intended (limited reservations available). Book one of our individual tables for parties between 6 - 10 people; or Private Dining Room for 12-18 guests.

What started out as a quick drink downstairs turned into a wonderful evening of great food and wine. The downstairs bar has a relaxed and understated vibe and just invited us to stay a little longer and have something to eat upstairs.

We went "off-piste" from our normal favourites and chose Salt and Pepper Tofu, Pork Hock and Crispy Fried Barramundi. We had friends and shared the meal. The Tofu raised eyes when we ordered and became the favourite dish when tasted.

What an experience. Longrain deliver the best Thai food that I have ever had, indeed one of the better restaurant experiences.

We went along on a Friday night, at seven thirty, so expected a wait, but to our surprise we were sat immediately. It wasn't as busy as we anticipated, with only a few people having to wait and one or two empty seats at peak times, but there was still a real buzz to the place. Very vibrant. Think Melbourne's 'Chin Chin'. Seating is all around large communal tables or at a high bar.

Food is again designed to share, but loads appealed so we were happy with this arrangement at Longrain. Also, unlike China Doll (for example), it didn't mean that more than half the dishes were off the table to couples. Only the banquet is unavailable to groups of less than four.

The food was amazing, absolutely delicious. We 'started' (but, remember, it's sharing so all dishes may come at the same time and the menu is not really set out as 'starters, mains, and sides') with the caramelised pork, prawns and pineapple. Six pieces and not enough! We'd have loved more. The flavour combination was wonderful.

Mains involved salmon in red curry and coconut simmered chicken. Fantastic again. I laughed at a friend a couple of weeks ago for drinking the leftover sauces, but came close myself at Longrain. Very fragrant and rich. The meat and fish were well cooked, moist and tender. We accompanied the mains with the braised mushrooms (in a beautiful sauce) and two portions of jasmine rice. Plenty of food and we were comfortably full following.

But not so full as to have no room for desert! I don't usually go for deserts in Thai restaurants, I find them a bit boring and unimaginative, but not here. I had the banana parcel, peanut ice cream, and sticky rice. Perfect, with contrasting flavours and textures working very well together.

Service was great. Relaxed, attentive, friendly, and discreet when needed. Empty glasses would leave the table without my even noticing, just as drinks would be topped up, cutlery replaced, and mess tidied.

Drinks list was fairly extensive, with a nice selection of red and white wines. We went for a nice bottle of Reising from mac Forbes in Yarra.

Post meal we'd recommend trying their basement bar, The Bunker. Great vibe, good music, lots of interesting drinks.

Really, really good dining experience. One of the best we've been to in Sydney.

After having heard great things about Longrain we expected it to be really good and to be fair to say, don't think it was quite as great as the hype made it out to be. In saying that the food was still good with some really great dishes and the staff were really fantastic

My husband and I had a rare date night at Longrain. We really enjoyed our evening. The cocktails were innovative and delicious. We enjoyed the buzzing atmosphere and we felt the communal dining experience adds to the fun. It's not a quiet and intimate place, think energised, dark and atmospheric.
Our food was delicious and we were sorry when it was time to leave. There were so many enticing things on the menu, I'd love to go back!
