“always good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 30, 2011

this is the nearest Thai restaurant to where we live and while the Potts Point/Kings Cross area has many places to choose from, we eat at Arun Thai every few months, generally when a last minute decision and feeling like somewhere reliable and enjoyable with quick and friendly service. This was the case this visit and we weren't let down. The menu changes regularly and you are spoilt for choice in starters and mains with a great selection of traditional dishes. Ingredients are fresh and food is well presented and serve sizes good. Plenty of beer, wine and spirits on hand.

“Tasty food but not a perfect experience”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2011

The restaurant was recommended by our hotel and our first impressions were good. The place had a good atmosphere and the staff were very pleasant. After ordering, hot plates were brought to our table. Unfortunately, by the time the food arrived, they were almost cold. The food also arrived in dishes that appeared not to have been preheated. As a result, the food was hot enough at the beginning but did cool down. However, it was very tasty. After our plates were cleared, we waited to be asked if we wanted anything else. We waited and waited but nobody came and although we tried to attract the attention of a member of staff to order coffee, it was to no avail. Eventually we got fed up and went up to the bar and paid. So, Arun Thai, if you were wondering why the English couple who dined in your restaurant on 29 April 2011 did not leave a tip, you now know.

“Sham Thai — A pastiche of the real thing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2011

Was looking forward to this meal given the mostly favourable reviews on Trip Advisor and other websites, but was ultimately disappointed.
On entering restaurant fairly lavishly decorated in he Thai style it's a little odd that the entire front-of-house and, from those we saw, the kitchen, is run not by Thais, but by Chinese. That could be of no matter, and the service was attentive and friendly, but the food was presented without the detail and subtlety expected of a high-end Thai restaurant. Flowers and carved fruit or vegetables do not figure here.
Most of the dishes were uninspiring and/or poor value — a mixed starter (A$18) consisted of one scallop, one fried tiger prawn in pastry (previously frozen), one cold spring roll (pretty good) and a small spoonful of fried chilli beef, while a special of salt and pepper baby squid was curiously lacking in both salt and pepper, but made up for it with lashings of greasy batter — very unpleasant. Tom Yum Goong soup had a good flavoured broth and a decent whole prawn count, but was overpopulated with ordinary field mushrooms and despite ordering the spicy option, was bland, lacking both the kick of Thai chilli and the zing of lemongrass and kaffir lime.
Mains were better with a Jungle Fish Curry having depth and originality of flavours, and a slow-cooked shin of beef in a Northern curry sauce with potato was meltingly tender and rich. However, the stir-fried vegetables were lukewarm and again, bland.
The wine list is pretty extensive with a good range of wines that complement the food, but we were served a different year (2010 — too young?) of the $39 wine we ordered (mesh Riesling from South Australia) that was acidic and over-sulphured.
We skipped dessert and coffee but the bill still came to more than $180 without gratuity; poor overall value given the quality of food presented.

Good straightforward Thai food – particularly liked Duck Red Curry and Mussaman curry - bill $90 for 2.
