“The worst place I have stayed”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2008

My husband and I, our 2 year old son and 5 month old daughter stayed at the Goldsbrough this week and I have to say it was absolutely terrible.
When we arrived there was no pram access into the building and no one to help with our luggage which had to be carried up stairs to get into the building.
We were put into a 1 bedroom 4 1/2 star room on the 5th floor. This room had windows that did not lock and opened onto a bridge with 8 lanes of traffic. Very unsafe with a 2 year old! and I don't think that this could be legal. We requested that we be moved to another room.
The second room was on the 12th floor. Again, this room had windows that did not lock nor did they have fly/security screens. The room was very dirty. There was mould on all of the windows, under the dryer and in the bath/shower. The toilet seat was deteriorating and discoloured. The oven was dirty and the balcony rails appeared to be too wide.
The staff were unhelpful and didn't properly explain directions to the carpark or how to pay for the parking (the carpark was across the street in the next block).
The lifts kept breaking down with guests stuck in them. One man was stuck for more than 3 hours. The reception lied to one group whose daughter was stuck for more than 30 minutes telling them that they had not had any problems with the lifts. During our stay we spoke to 6 different groups of guests that had been stuck.
The garbage rooms are located next to the lifts on every level. They absolutely stank and these smells wafted down the corridor.
The spa was not working.
Our son had to sleep between us as we were terrified that he would get out windows or sliding door onto the balcony. Hence, we got no sleep.
We decided to leave early and contacted wotif who we had booked through. They managed to get us a refund for the nights that we didn't use.
Definitely not a 4 1/2 star room. We would not recommend this property as it does not meet basic safety or hygiene standards.

We stayed at the Oaks Goldsborough Apartments 24-30 December 2007 in a 4.5 star one bedroom. We were on the 8th floor with harbour view. The higher the floor, the better the view. 8th is probably the lowest you want to be.

The room we had was ok, a little small. It had a TV with 4 channels and a Dvd player. There was a washer/dryer (soap supplied), dishwasher (soap supplied) oven, stove and fridge. The pots/pans/cutlery and dishes were very basic, 4 of everything.

The good
- Location
The OGA is a great location, 2 minutes walk to Darling Harbour, the aquarium (very good) restaurants and 5 minutes to Coles Grocery store. The monorail station is across the street and the Pyrmont ferry is close by as well.

- Parking
The OGA has a deal with 2 parking lots, we used the Darling Harbour parkade which is 1/2 between the OGA and the harbour and indoors. We paid 16/night instead of 25 with the OGA. Speak to the front desk first to get your ticket.

The bad
- The concierge service was inconsistent in the quality of the information. They would not guarantee us a specific unit with harbour view when we reserved.
- The bedroom is on the inside next to the common corridor, you can hear people coming and going when in the bedroom.

The ugly
- You do not want to have an apartment on the backside of the building. They face a car park 10 feet away and a busy street is near one end.

  • Disliked — Noisy in the common corridor at night

Stayed for 3 nights. This was an original wool store buiding built in 1883 & subsequently converted to apartments. Location is excellent for transportation with mono rail a few minutes walk, light rail and a short stroll to Pyrmont ferry terminal. From here basically you can travel to the city, circular quay and central rail station.
Apartments have full kitchen facilities with microwave, dishwasher, air con.and full laundry.
The 2 b/r apts are more town house style with sleeping up stairs.
Basic furniture in all rooms quite adequate. Beds are comfortable enough.
Apartment we occupied is badly in need of some work. Main bedroom has ensuite. Shower arm was almost falling from wall. Mould on grouting around bath. Lack of hanging facilities in bathroom which badly need cleaning around skirting boards and in need of re grouting and siliconing. Kitchen is very dark, and needs better lighting.
When booking were not told of upstairs/downstairs arrangements and stairway is steep and where you do a U turn half way up there is no hand rail. For older people lugging ports to bedrooms is difficult and I consider it dangerous.
Checking with reception were advised that a lot of apartments have been refurbished. I feel this should have been advised at time a making booking and a request for a refurbished apartment would have been made.
Reception staff were very efficient and helpful. Check out is 10 am, and were allowed to store luggage until our departure at 4 pm.
It is only a short stroll to the Darling Harbour shopping centre, and ample choice of restaurants with daily specials at reasonable price. Aprrox 10 minute walk to Sky City casino where good quality cheap meals can be purchased.
If you are looking for accomodation with access to public transport and what is considered a safe environment then this is excellent place.
It would be helpful if the apartments were advertised with 2 level living.

My wife and I stayed here while on business for 5 nights.

The place is quirky and interesting and well located for Darling Harbour, the Monorail and Light Railway.

The room was okay although a cockroach was spotted up on the vanity one morning.

We asked for a high room with a view and got a high room with a view of an even higher wall.

We did find the room noisy as you could hear anyone in heels walking in their unit several rooms away.

Also, our double bed was actually 2 x singles taped together. The linen was all double-sized but underneath were 2 x singles. Odd...

All in all okay but when we go back to Sydney we'll almost certainly stay elsewhere.

I recently stayed at this motel for a 2 night stay. The room was spacious, lovely decorated and had all the essentials. The only problem with the room was the bed it was very hard and not the best to sleep on, we pulled out the sofa bed on the second night which was a lot more comfortable. The other problem was noise. The way the apartments are designed means you can hear everything that is happening on the bottom floor (where the pool and reception is) even though we were 8 floors up. Also the floors are wooden and so we could clearly hear the person wearing heals who was constantly walking around the floors at 7am in the morning. I can't comment on the views as our room wasn't facing the harbor.,

On the plus side it is in a great location, 5 mins walk to the harbor, star city, monorail and tram. There is a mini supermarket around the corner to which was great to stock up on the essentials such as bread. The pool and spa area was nice and is currently getting work on to improve. The gym is nothing special.

All in all it for a short stay it was a nice hotel and pretty good value for money (we got a deal from wotif). I would stay there again for its location, but would again sleep on the pull out sofa.

Stayed here and it was amazing. It is an old building that has be completely updated and my room had a fantastic view. There was a kitchen and laundry facilities and it was at Darling Harbour and close to the monorail to get around. I loved the old world theme with modern facilities and gym and fabulous indoor pool. Would go back in a flash.

My 2 sons (aged 10 and 8) and I stayed for 4 nights at the Goldsbrough. Despite having no view, we loved the apartment and benefitted from the great location. Definitely the best apartment (out of 5) that we stayed in during our trip to Australia.
