My partner and I booked the hotel room on a non-refundable pay up front basis as we considered it a pretty decent price, using the room for travelling to attend a wedding so we knew there was no risk of us cancelling. Immediately after booking, we read the reviews... Kings Cross, Red Light, Prostitutes, Drunks, Drugs etc etc....

I can reassure anyone going its nothing like what is portrayed, yes it is in a Red Light District' but this is nothing more than a few 'Gentlemen’s' clubs and adult shops, certainly no more than you'd see in many suburbs in any city, and after all you don’t actually have to go in... Yes, there were a few rowdy groups, probably Hen and Stag do's which can be loud but again, this is found almost everywhere. My advice is stay aware, don’t flash your valuables and just walk through and you'll be fine (again, much like any slightly uncomfortable areas in cities). Even better, from Kings Cross station rather than walk up the main street take the street behind, its well lit, quiet and stress free.

The hotel, we stayed in Room 310 on the second floor, it was clean, spacious and had a real boutique feel to it. It was obvious that the building had been chopped and changed from what it was originally to its now hotel form but it didn't detract from being a nice room. The bed was comfy, we even had one spare. The TV worked (if that's your thing, Sydney offers much better viewing!), the bathroom although small was clean tidy and the shower was always hot and had a good pressure.

I will admit where this room had the windows toward the Kings Cross area I was woken a few times during the night because of loud people, however my partner slept through it all so I guess if you're sensitive to noise and its absolutely essential you need undisturbed sleep, ask for a room at the back, or stay elsewhere.

We didn’t try it because we had a pretty full on schedule, but the hotel has a lovely cafe set up outside the front which catches the morning sun and it seemed to serve great food and coffee at a good price.

Room cleaning is an option, a free one, but if you want it done leave the card on the door, if you don’t, don’t leave it out. It's pretty self explanatory. We personally chose not to as we didn’t see a need over 3 days.

The hotel is a minutes’ walk from Kings Cross station where you can catch public transport to anywhere in the city, Circular Quays is about 10-15mins away, and Bondi is about 45mins. Aside from the hotel, if you're planning a short trip to Sydney we would strongly recommend a mymulti travel card, it makes travelling effortless and its cheap ($44 for 7 days, bargain.)

Hotel staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. If you're going to arrive late, call them, don't just expect them to wait for you, they are real people with working hours like the rest of us. If you call however they make arrangements for you to get into the property.

Summary, we are a mid/late twenties couple, whom I would consider fairly well travelled, and I would recommend staying in this hotel. We paid $280 for 3 nights in one of the 'better' rooms not including breakfast, now if you want to see Sydney on a budget and don’t particularly want to stay in hostels, enjoy your own space and want to stay extremely central to the City, what more could you ask for?! Highly recommended, we'll be staying again.

Hopefully you can ignore the comments made by some people who appear to have never travelled out of their own lounge before and have a great time in Sydney.

Room Tip: Rooms to the rear will be quieter. If you're there for a special occasion, tell the hotel in ad...

We stayed for 2 nights in April 2013. Hotel accommodation in Sydney seemed v expensive due to our poor exchange rate and the hotel staff here were so helpful in advising us that the website had a cheaper price if we selected unserviced rooms for the 2 nights. (this meant that we just didn't get the room cleaned for our 2nd day's stay which was no problem!) We paid $89 for a clean v comfortable double with great en suite, TV, air con etc and in a central location easy walking to everything we wanted in Sydney. There is a great small restaurant at the entrance which does lovely meals, coffees etc and also the cafe near the fountain called Alice's Ithink ...good for breakfast and free wifi and plenty of other cafes for eating, although we eventually found the food hall in one of the shopping malls which is amazing and really worth visiting to stretch the budget. (we had 3 hungry teenagers to feed!)..has every sort of style of food and amazing fruit salad/smoothie/juicers. You can pay for wifi at the hotel but most cafes give it free when having a coffee etc. Also there's a transfer bus to the airport for $12 each which is cheaper than the train and picks up every 15 mins but needs to be booked a day in advance. Maybe leave plenty of time: our collection was a bit late but the hotel automatically chased them up for us and the journey was quick and really hassle free. The hotel staff were so helpful and stored our bags until our room was ready. Thank you Peter for yr warm welcome! Theres a kitchen & washing machine etc downstairs so its fantastic for anyone travelling for a while or on limited budget. Really recommend them & would definitely look up their other hotels & use them too.

Room Tip: I think we might have been upgraded but we had room on 2nd floor which didn't have a view but wa...

Just to point out we booked a "lower ground room" which is a bit cheaper than the other rooms. It is my understanding that the lower ground rooms are more basic than regular rooms and are intended for people on a budget. The room was VERY BASIC. It was very small, dark and in the basement. It obviously used to be a store room or accommodation for "the help" in the old days. The decor was very dated. We had a window which had bars on it and had a view of a dirty alley. In fairness it does look like the pictures on booking.com so i wasn't expecting great things. Room was clean. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel is in kings cross area which is the red light district but on the plus side it has lots of restaurants and bars and is close to a subway station which will take you to the city center. The area can be a bit seedy at night. If you dont plan on spending any time in the room except to sleep than this place is ok. If you intend to spend any amount of time in the room than either book an upstairs room or go somewhere else.

Room Tip: pay a little extra for an upstairs room or stay elsewhere

Thank you for staying with Sydney Lodges at Springfield Lodge.

We're so happy you got to take advantage of our very affordable Lower Ground Budge Basement rooms. They are a fantastic way to save money and still be in a great location!

Kings Cross is a high energy, adult environment so of course a bit of noise does come with this. However, we hear that guests usually feel the endless list of things to see and do in the area make up for it.

Thank you for taking the time to review us. We look forward to seeing you again someday soon.

First of all, the hotel was very well located, just off the main road through King's Cross, surrounded by bars, restaurants, mini markets etc.. and the metro station was less than 5 mins walk away.
Rooms were very comfy (we had a king room at the rear of the hotel) which was quiet and overlooked a quiet tree lined street. Only negative was the size of the bathroom (tiny) just enough room to move around, although clean and fairly modern. The hotel had it's own restaurant
with outdoor seating (we never tried it although it always seemed quite busy)
Staff were friendly and helpful (particularly John, who helped sort out our airport transfer)
Note that when arriving at the domestic airport beware of the company offering transfers into town .... they are just about ok to use and there's no alternative at the arrivals hall. Just book a one way and then get a friendlier, more reliable company to take you back to the airport. They didn't forget us or anything, but they were so disorganised and the drivers attitude and driving was terrible!
I would definately stay at the Springfield Lodge again if ever in Sydney.

Room Tip: King rooms at the rear of the hotel are quieter and slightly larger (ours had two windows and was ve...

We stayed 2 nights in the Springfield Lodge, over the Easter weekend, and it was fantastic. Location, affordability, style, comfort, cleanliness ... everything gets the thumbs up here. The staff were friendly and helpful, the bed was comfy, and I loved the elegance of the facade and interior. And for $120 per night, you cannot go wrong! Try the cafe on the corner by the fountain, where the police station is, for breakfast - just fabulous - kept us going all day.

I stayed 10 days in Springfield lodge at the end of March 2013. considering the price, the conditions of this lodge is good and acceptable. the staffs were kind and rooms were clean and cosy. the lodge is very close to CBD and train station is just 2 minutes away from it. the only problem was the price of internet access which was more than twice of regular ISP's. So, I bought a prepaid vodafone simcard with required amount of data.

We 2 adults from San Diego stayed in a family room on the top front floor twice between March 3-12, 2013. Consideration, booking and payment, by choice, was done using direct email 9 months in advance. Substantial interior physical renovations were completed before our arrival...carpet, small-room private baths, new air conditioning units etc. Lovely, but impractical, hard floors were covered to minimize noise. We had earplugs and were prepared to block out noise coming through the beautiful floor-to-ceiling front windows. There was little noise to block out while we were there but installing an additional full-glass panel in front of each window would buffer sound and likely not lessen the beauty of the Lodge. There is a terrific new "Whole Foods" type of store across the street. Australia has the largest and tastiest fresh carrots I've ever had. BTW, the room had a small fridge, coffee maker and flat panel tv but with a poor selection of channels. Channels will be added we were told.
CAUTION: while the location and cost really is ideal for the budget-minded tourist and the police station is only a block away, there is, most especially between sunset and dawn,
a noticeable presence of "street weirdo's"...for lack of a better description... to be wary of.
I am an avid picture taker. One evening at 5PM I was quickly walking from the bus stop to
the lodge through a small square. I quickly took a few pictures. Out of the blue came a woman who thought her strong smack would send my small camera flying. It did not because it was tethered to my neck but she continued to accost me for taking pictures. The police came, but she had disappeared and my review showed her in one photo far in the distance sitting at a table with other distressed-looking people.
BETTER MEMORY: Marousa of the lodge was terrific from our first email contact to our final departure!! Hopefully you've already experienced such a helpful and friendly "front desk" employee. She saved us a great deal of money we otherwise would have spent for the same
experiences, covered our faults and we are most grateful for her service and all she provided, especially her friendship. A return to Australia and Springfield Lodge in the future is on
our "do again" bucket list.

Room Tip: Ask Marousa for advice. BTW, the family rooms will likely be more comfortable for 2 adults. The ba...

We're so happy to hear you enjoyed your stay with us and found the lodge comfortable and conveniently located. Sorry to hear about your incident with a person in the street nearby. This is the first time I've ever heard of anything happening like this in the area and it can only be described as a very strange one-off. I hope you were ok and it didn't detract too much from your stay with us.
