Owner description: Circular Quay is a colorful port where ferries and cruise ships board and depart, and boat watching can be as good a pastime as people watching. While street performers entertain outside, those wanting a more cultural experience can head into the Museum of Contemporary Art where a sculpture garden on the roof is as much a view as the waterways below.

“what a pity”
Reviewed April 27, 2013

We recentlydecided to take a ferry to Manly. Superb day in February We set off from double bay.
Ferry to Circular Quay was great but How does a stranger find his way around the somewhat dilapidated Quay area?
Congestion and discomfort particularly if in any way disabled,We were fortunate as people with us knew 'the Ropes'1
What a show place it should be. Cruise ships next door great trips available BUT not much to encourage the tourist to venture acres the most stunning Harbour in the world!!
We stillenjoyed Manly and the trip back!1

“Iconic Sydney”
Reviewed April 25, 2013

When you are in Circular Quay you are at the centre of every thing in Sydney, with the Opera House, the bridge and the ferries. Also fun watching the cruise ships come and go.

“Locus of activity”
Reviewed April 24, 2013

For a visitor locating in a hotel close to the Quay is highly recommended. The Opera House, the Botanical Garden, your transporation hub and some of the best dining is right here or just toward the Bridge in the Rocks. You will want to avoid taxis whenever possible as we experienced a driver who could not find the Bridge (!), another who drove us completely aorund the Garden clearly to run up the fare and others who were difficult to understand or overtly hostile. Proximity to the Quay obviates that as the ferries, the hop on/hop off and other options are right there...not to mention the Opera House. Plan your stay and your activities around the Quay and it will save time, $$, and aggravation.

“Circular Quay is the tourist hub of Sydney”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

NO-ONE visits Sydney without going to Circular Quay ("Quay" is another name for a wharf). The ferries leave from here to lots of places on the harbor and up the Parramatta River towards the Sydney Olympic site at Homebush Bay. I used to get the Jet-Cat catamaran to work when I lived here and worked downtown. Tourists might want to avoid rush hour here as it is a working transportation port and there is an army of workers going to or from the adjacent city center.

Many tourists take a ferry to Taronga Park Zoo, or Manly Beach (which gives you great views of the harbor). Because the highrises of downtown are right there, when approaching or leaving the Quay the view is similar to leaving the Port of New York. On Sunday Funday the you can ride public transport all day for about $5.00 each if you have at least one adult and one child.

From here you can go one way to the cruise ship terminal, some museums and The Rocks (the original Sydney settlement) or the other way to the Opera House and the Royal Botanical Gardens. I would recommend exploring both ways and spending all day. For great views from above you can go to the restaurant/bar at Australia Square (the 50-storey round building) on the 48th floor as I recall. It's free but you are supposed to indulge in some food or drinks. Better than Sydney Tower which is higher, but has lesser views because it is further away from the harbor and costs about $24 to go up.

Be aware that all your food options here are pretty expensive for what you get. Sydney was recently judged as the most expensive city in the world, and one of the catagories was the cost of lunch downtown.
