Mantra on Kent
Ranked #77 of 186 Hotels in Sydney
Reviewed October 15, 2009

We arrived at the Mantra on Kent late on a Sunday evening and were welcomed curbside by a staff member to help us with our bags. After a few room changes, we finally got a suitable room (first one was too high - I hate lifts, the second had no bath or washing machine, and the third was OK, although it had no washing machine). We ordered room service on our first night and it was promptly delivered and was fairly tastey.

We were disappointed with the room, not only was it quite dirty, we had booked a "1 bedroom" apartment, but it wasn't a one bedroom, it was really a studio with a funny sliding door around the bedroom. As we were travelling with our 8 month old, we really need 2 separate areas so she wouldn't be interupted while she slept. This room layout meant we pretty much had to go to sleep when she did. The "king" bed was actually 2 single matresses put together and you could feel the bump in the middle which made it quite uncomfortable.

The kitchenette was adequate, with everything you needed to cook a meal, including pots, serving dishes, crockery, cuttlery, even a potato masher :)

The room had a laundry, but no washing machine. On the first morning I asked if there was somewhere to do some washing, I was told I could use another room when I needed to. However, when I returned from my walk, there was a washing machine in the laundry which was great.

The hot water, both in the bathroom and the kitchenette, took at least 10 minutes to start heating up. But once it came through it was fine and it never ran out.

On our final night one of our neighbours decided to come home around 3am and start singing and carrying on, I called down to reception and someone was up knocking on their door within 5 minutes - another great customer service experience.

We requested a late check out, which was granted for free until midday, but after this we would be charged $20/hour up until 3pm, and thereafter we would be charged a full day's rate. Needless to say we checked out at 3pm - another great service offered by this hotel.

I would recommend this hotel, based on the location and customer service alone. However, the rooms do need a good clean, especially the curtains and carpet.

We organized two deluxe rooms for friends and ourselves. We specifically choose the hotel as it advertised full laundry facilities and TV/DVD. We liked the room, however there was no washing machine. It has a laundry room and drier, just no machine. The staff informed us you had to "request" a washing machine and not all rooms have them. Also, the MovieLink and TV service was not functional and none of the remotes where working for the TV/DVD. Also be aware that the parking charges for the parking station are $40 per day. The sofa-bed was bent and sagging in the middle (my back is still not over it). There was no coffee machine either. I was embarrassed to have organized this trip.

Booked a 1 bedroom apartment, room as expected, no view to speak of but clean and great location to see Sydney over 2 days. 2 mins from Darling Harbour, 15 mins walk to the Opera House, ferries etc.
Staff helpful. Good value.
Advantages - location
Negatives - bathroom let it down being small in size, 2/3 size bath and not great shower.

I stayed with two friends at Mantra on Kent on a last minute trip to Sydney. I actually made a reservation just the day before our arrival, and the confirmation for our one-bedroom apartment was quick and I was pleased to find out that they had a special promotion through their website-you stay three nights and pay for two only.

Mantra is ideally located in the heart of the city, Darling Harbour is a short walk away, and you have good shops and eating places all around. Loved the location. The lobby was small and unimpressive, but the staff were very helpful and patient with our requests throughout our stay. Check-in was smooth and very quick. Was a little disappointed with the apartment at first to be honest, the lifts were old and noisy, our apartment much smaller and older than expected. Our bedroom in particular was tiny, there was barely any room apart from the bed, so we left our luggage in the living area and spent most of our time in the living/dining area. There was also a little kitchen, washing area and bathroom, all clean and functional. After a day or two I stopped noticing all the little flaws and actually felt that the place was cosy and comfortable, and certainly sufficient for all our needs. It was cleaned daily and we always had a good supply of bathroom paper and clean towels. On our last day, we requested if the reception could hold our luggage and parcels for an extra few hours after check-out as we had a late flight, and they were most accommodating.

All in all a pleasant stay. While I will probably want to try out newer apartments if I do return to Sydney, I certainly had a comfortable time at the Mantra, and the location was perfect and the staff service very good.

We recently spent 4 nights at Mantra on Kent in a studio apartment and found it to be in a fantastic location, close to Darling Harbour and the City centre. The room was well equiped with a kitchen and very clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. My only complaint is the noise you can hear in the hallways, room to room they are sound proof but as soon as someone goes to the lift you can hear everything. Also the room doors are very heavy and slam each time someone comes and goes, which isn't pleasant at 6am.

This hotel is very much in the three star range but given it's price and amenities, it represents excellent value. It is clean and tidy and it's proximity to Darling Harbour, the Queen Victoria Building and the railway station make it a good, reliable venue.

Most rooms are apartments, some with balconies. There are no views of note as the building faces away from Darling Harbour. The views are of opposing buildings across the city or the skyline.

The apartments are services daily, although dishes are not washed in the kitchen. The service seems to extend to making the bed and changing towels in the bathroom.

The rooms are spacious with cable tv, dvd players and clock radio. A generous kichenette is provided with fridge, stove top & pots and pans. The bedroom is a little on the small side but with an ample wardrobe. The beds are comfortable with good linen.

The Hotel has a restaurant that serves a basic breakfast. I've never dined in the hotel at night as the proximity to Darling Harbour means that all manner of options are just a short stroll away.

The Mantra is not the Hilton but it isn't a dive either. It represents very good value for money. There are only two things to be weary of - the shower seems to offer only two temperatures, hot or cold. In addition, the irons need replacing as they are very old.

Other than that, you can't really fault it!

My wife and I stayed here for four nights in early September 2008. We had a studio apartment on the 18th floor with a partial view of Darling Harbour. The studio was quite spacious and very clean with fairly basic furnishings. The building appears to have been partially refurbished as some areas, notably the shower, showed evidence of age. Like a previous reviewer we noticed the outside of the windows were dirty. Our rate included full breakfast and represented good value for money for a city centre location (2 mins form Darling Harbour). The staff were very efficient and helpful and found us a room well before normal check in time as we had arrived early in the morning. Overall an agreeable experience and we would stay here again.
