Owner description: Sydney’s best kept secret The Brett Whiteley Studio was the workplace and home of Australian artist, Brett Whiteley (1939–92). The artist bought the former warehouse in 1985 and converted it into a studio and exhibition space. He lived there from 1987 to 1992, the year he died in Thirroul. The visitor is offered the unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the space – the studio with his unfinished paintings, art equipment and collections of reference books, and the graffiti wall covered with quotes and images. The living area has memorabilia such as photographs, objects, postcards, furniture, his music collection and sketchbooks. The gallery has changing exhibitions of the artist’s works: paintings, drawings, sculpture and graphics borrowed from the Brett Whiteley Studio Collection, Art Gallery of New South Wales and private collections. There is a small gallery shop with postcards, posters and other merchandise for sale. There is no cafe at the Studio, however visitor

Tucked away in a gorgeous part of Surry Hills with coffee shops, boutiques and little street gardens is this inspiring gallery. Just a door in a little street.
From the moment we entered we were met and introduced to the gallery by a very sweet girl who was obviously enthused about her job and the gallery.
Enlightening, as I now have a far greater respect and deeper understanding of the work Brett Whiteley produced. A great way to while away a Sunday afternoon.

Thank Lynne L

Hidden in a back street of lovely Surry Hills is the Brett Whiteley studio museum. Open Saturdays and Sundays 10am–4pm, free. We wondered if we had the correct place as the property is right on the road front with just a closed door that gives the impression that the studio is closed. But we opened the door and such a surprise - a Life Drawing class was in process. Hopefully the nude model wasn't so surprised as others who came through the door like us and looked like possums caught in the spotlight! The museum is a wonderful two storey place full of Whiteley's art and upstairs there is a couch and beanbags to be comfortable while you watch a video featuring Whiteley and about his life. Very interesting. Also books to look through and even his sketch pad to peruse. A wonderful attraction and way to spend a good hour and then find good coffee around the corner.

I love the Brett Whiteley Gallery. Even if you are not totally enamoured of his art I think it is worth a look at the place where he lived and worked, and some of the works he produced. I don't love all his art but I enjoyed seeing where he lived and worked, and think he had a good sense of colour and symmetry. I found it an interesting and enjoyable place to be, and think it's great that it is free to visit.

For someone very interested in art, this is an excellent place to visit, even if you're not familiar with Brett Whiteley's work. The gallery downstairs showed a selection of his work, paintings and sculptures with a general beach/sea theme.

Upstairs there were some of his earlier works in the first room, with his studio left as it was at the time of his death, including an unfinished painting. This was the more interesting part of the house, with personal artefacts such as books, photos and objects scattered around, the paints and brushes he used, and quotes written on the walls.

I got a bus following the directions on the website, which dropped me just around the corner from the museum. It was very easy to get there from the centre of Sydney.
