Hyde Park runs the length of several city blocks and has some very old plantings there which give wonderful shade on a hot day.

It's a great place to relax and people watch as many city workers do during lunch time, but also a lovely place to explore all the nooks and crannies.

At the southern end of the Park near Liverpool Street is the Anzac War Memorial which was officially opened in 1934 to commemorate the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) landing at Gallipoli, Turkey, on 25 April 1915.

There's also a monument for the fallen soldiers of the past decades. The park itself is not that special, although the alley with the big trees is nice to look at.

Hyde Park is a pleasant park, stretching north-south beside Sydney's Central Business District. It's a traditional park layout, with many paths running through large areas of grass, with a large number of trees for shade, making it a delightful place for a picnic or some outdoor reading. Points of interest within Hyde Park include the following:

- The ANZAC Memorial, a building honoring the war dead from Australia and New Zealand; it's open to the public during daylight hours only. It stands at the head of a plaza with pools and flags, which is always accessible.
- A statute of Captain James Cook, holding a telescope; this is the only statue of the famous explorer that I found in Sydney.
- A large, lively fountain with sculptures of mythological figures, including Artemis and Theseus. It's surrounded by benches and is a favorite place for buskers to perform.
- A large chess set, with thigh-high pieces on an enormous chessboard, that the public is welcome to use during daylight hours.

The park and its attractions are free, and the park itself never closes. There is a booth-style restroom in the park that charges a small fee. Attractions immediately surrounding the park include the Australian Museum, St. Mary's Cathedral, St. James Church, the Hyde Park Barracks, and twin statues of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

When I was living in Sydney, I sometimes took lunch I made to Hyde park and had with friends. It's only 5 minutes walk from City central (Town Hall) and I liked to lay on the grass under shadows of trees and read a book. You still hear car sounds but the green of the park relaxes you. Depending on the season you can also enjoy flowers planted in the park. Hyde park is also a good meeting point. :)
