Owner description: When international director and closet ghoul Alfred Hitchcock visited Sydney in the sixties this was his infamous point of reference. Locals know, and tourists do not, that this is the last stop for the desperate few, it also a beautiful location for a spectacular scenic cliff top walk that begins at The Gap Park.

A wonderful walk along a steep cliff, overlooking rugged ocean views the steep side and a calm settlement the other. A nice place this - Watson's bay, with calm beaches, wonderful walkways and this Gap ;)

Best views for free.

Take a ferry across from Circular Quay to Watsons bay to complete the experience.

A scenic drive or bus ride from town through upper class suburbs of Sydney. Located on the South Head of Sydney Harbour retains all it's natural beauty. Watson's Bay Park across the road, famous Doyles seafood restaurant as well as the Watson's Bay Hotel and Camp Cove is nearby.

In a recent visit to Sydney, we took a bus from Circular Quay out to the Gap park and enjoyed the walk along the cliff top. View across the ocean is excellent with many photo opportunities. The path is very good - suitable for all visitors. We walked from the Macquarie Lighthouse (you can't miss it from the bus) to The Gap Park, then joined onto the walk out to South Head and back to Watson's Bay where we caught the ferry back to Circular Quay. All-up this took 3-4 hours, but with a few stops along the way. Can imagine that the view from The Gap Park of the Sydney-Hobart yacht race on Boxing Day would be very good as the boats exit Sydney Heads and head South. When visiting Sydney, this is recommended as a nice walk.

I love The Gap- the force of the waves is amazing and the view of the horizon is something else. I have seen whales breeching in the distance- bring your binocs and look for the puff of 'steam' prior to them breaking the surface of the water. Plus you get to experience a bit of the bush at the top. Bring a picnic too :) However there are some very nice restaurants down the road at Watsons Bay- they tend to get a bit packed in the summer- as does the ferry! BTW The Gap is 'famous' as a suicide spot in Australia- but don't let that put you off- in recent years they have increased the number of fences etc so you can't really 'fall' over the edge nowadays.
