“An elegant place of times gone by”

This place has a very special feel and should remain as an integral part of Sydney's history. It is so gracious. I'm sure there are places such as this all over the world, and this is Sydney's.

“State Theatre Sing-a-long Sound of Music”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

You can dress up or just sing and join in the good fun for people of all ages. You don't even have to know the words of the songs as they are on the screen whenever the songs start to be performed by the original Julie Andrews and co. The State Theatre is gorgeous with plenty of well spaced out seating on two levels. Seating in the stalls is easy access but getting out did require climbing a small mountain of stairs that was a bit unexpected. The theatre is easy to find in the CBD and there are lots of places close by to eat before or afterr the show

“Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

This is an annual event held every mardi GRAS. I have been coming for the last 6 years or so. When it first started it was a key part of mardi gras and the audience were primarily LGBT and as such all the comments etc thrown out during the movie were bawdy and funny. It is MUCH more mainstream now with a LOT of children in the audience and not nearly as fun as it used to be.

The theatre itself is gorgeous though. Don't sit in the stalls under the overhang of the mezzanine because it gets bloody hot.

“A Gem”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

The State Theatre is very easy to overlook whilst walking by, given it's very understated exterior, but walk in and be very pleasantly surprised. But for a show we would still not have discovered this gem. It's like stepping back in time. Absolutely worth a visit.

“Ornate gem”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

This is a wonderfully over the top ornate venue, which manages to create an intimate feel - you do feel close to the performers. The bar is rather ordinary, so just have a glass of bubbly and eat after in one of the local small bars.
