Excellent place to stay! its really clean and the kitchen is huge and well equipped! not really a party hostel but you can meet some nice people! staff not overly friendly but the place more than makes up for it! it may be a couple of dollars more than other hostels but the great toilets/showers/kitchen make it worth it! internets expensive though!sure there are cheaper places! oh and theres woolworths or coles (supermarkets) located on george street ..woolworths is near to the town hall coles is closer~! would recommend this place!

I stayed at railway YHA and while the facilites were great, there was no atmosphere in the place. It is a very large cllinical place and they only seem to want your money. I asked for some advice about seeing Sydney and the staff were unhelpful and didn't seem to care. Nobody was friendy at all - I tried to speak to several people but the place just seems to kill any ability to make friends. The place is so huge that it seems to be difficult (if not impossible) to meet people. They charge for EVERYTHING. I am now staying in a small independent hostel in Kings Cross where people are friendly, the staff are really helpul - they even know my name and ask how my day was, and there are tons of free things (breakfast, internet, beer). Also, the hostel that i am staying at now has loads of activities and fun stuff going on - nothing like the YHA. Avoid YHAs at all costs unless you want to pay for everything and don't care about meeting other travellers.

  • Liked — clean
  • Disliked — too expensive - you can get the same accommodation & better at other hostels

I stayed here for four nights in March 2007. The hostel is very well located five minutes walk from the main railway station in Sydney and about 40 minutes walk from the Opera House/Harbour Bridge (but of course there is public transport that can get you there much quicker. I had a private room with ensuite bathroom which for the price was fantastic and very clean. The kitchen area was large and well equipped and there was a lovely big dinning and lounge area. There were a good number of internet terminals, a pool table and lots of space to sit and relax. The staff were universally helpful and friendly and the whole place seemed to have a very positive atmosphere.

The area around the hostel is standard inner city fare - lots of restaurants, bars and 7-11s. There are quite a few sex shops on the main drag into the CBD but they are unobtrusive and I don't think single women would need worry about feeling intimidated or anything. It is not a particularly sleazy area.

I would stay here again - great for accessing the sights and great for transport connections. If you want late nights out clubbing or drinking you may want to pick somewhere closer to the CBD but this wasn't a problem for me.

It as GREAT.
~ Very Clean, bathrooms also.
~ Huge Kitchen and Fridges for food
~ Friendly Staff
~ Comfortable Rooms

No complaints at all. Note - It is not a place to stay and party at the hostel. As the night life at the hostel was very avergae, but the train station in at your doorstep and buses arcoss the road!! So anything is possiable!

Stayed at the Railway Square with seven other friends/family over the New Year (30th Dec 06 - 5th Jan 07) - it was great! I'm not usually a big fan of huge hostels, but i loved this one!

It was modern, clean, clean toilets/showers etc, clean kitchen, clean communal area, nice social hostel, front desk staff pretty ok too, i didn't find any negatives about it!

The location was top notch too! Top of George St, right next to Cetral station, supermarket, markets, travel agents, 7/11, every type of shop & loadsa bars all within walking distance.
Darling Harbour under 10 mins walk, The Rocks/Harbour Bridge/Circular Quay nearly 30 mins walk, or 4 mins on the train from Central.

Highly recommended!

A good, clean hostel (a little cheaper than the YHA central). Has a small outdoor pool but it was a little chilly to use when we were there!

The rooms, bathrooms and kitchens are clean and still look fairly new.

Excellent base for exploring the city and not noisy - handy for the Central station (next door!) and a wide range of buses stop in Railway Square.

Note - they only have a limited range of food in the cafe, just basic breakfast, hot drinks and snacks. But there are plenty of supermarkets / convenience stores nearby.

They also have some special events but we didn't attend these.

  • Liked — Great location and cleanliness
  • Disliked — Perhaps a more developed food range
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't forget your towel!

Having previously stayed in the Central YHA, I decided to give the Railway Square YHA a try. It was well worth the move. The hostel is smaller (but still has lots of rooms) than the Central, and it's easier to meet and chat to people. I stayed in a four share dorm. The room was in good condition, with lockers (bring your own padlock - a small one would be best for these lockers), and wall mounted bunk lights. The ladies bathroom on my floor could have done with new shower curtains, but was otherwise clean. The walls seemed thick, and although the hostel plays some music in communal areas in the evening, which you can hear through the windows, they switch this off at a reasonable hour.

There are dorms which are made out of trains. The carriages are parked on a railway platform, and real trains go past them (there is a wall in between), but a girl in my dorm had moved from these because she found them loud. However, they are cheaper, and it might be fun for the experience.

The kitchen is sufficiently large for people to be able to cook comfortably, but fridge and cupboard space is at a premium. Bring a sturdy shopping bag to keep all your food together. As at the Central YHA, the tea towels are nasty, so bring your own if this bothers you.

There is a large table to sit around, and also some smaller tables with armchairs. There is a TV room, and internet.

The location is good, next to the station, and with plenty of sights nearby. The area feels safe for a solo female traveller.

  • Liked — The friendly feel
  • Disliked — The shower curtains in the ladies bathroom on the second floor
  • Tips/Secrets — Bring a sturdy cloth shopping bag to keep all your food together and safe in the kitchen
