Stayed here with friends over the Australia Day weekend. An impressive old university building (former student accommodation?) located within tree lined avenues of the campus. My room was a single with shared bathroom. The room was basic but clean with comfortable bed and the common bathroom was clean with good hot water. Public transport is just out of the grounds. It is also an easy 20min walk to George Street, restaurants and China town. It's about a 30 minute walk to Darling harbour from the campus. A huge park is next to the campus. Be aware that hotel parking is limited and if not available you can use paid parking in the university grounds, Sat and Sun 6am-6am $6 per day, but week days it is expensive $24 per day, 6am-6am.

We were in two 'family' rooms but so many beds were crammed into such a small space that there was practically no floor space. This is NOT a hotel......they do not provide meals. There is a (dirty) kitchen but nothing to cook with (no pans, knives etc) and (if you're lucky) there are sometimes paper plates, plastic cups, teabags and instant coffee. There was a fire alarm at 2am one night and the staff didn't know what to do. The place could do with a good clean. The only thing to do if you're unfortunate to find yourself staying here is to head off to King Street (a 5 min walk away) where there are loads of good restaurants.

The level of accommodation is below that of a hostel/backpackers.

As guests, we walk around in a disgusted, sullen mood trying to make the best of a bad situation.

As a student dorm I'd guess it would be great.

As a place to stay on a visit to Sydney it's woefully inadequate.

How happier the place would be if the conditions raised the mood of the guests to that above toleration.

The good thing; the building is nice on the outside and the staff are friendly.

The bad things: beware the kitchen has no hotplates. Smart German tourists I saw bought their own gas burner. It's called a "kitchenette" and only has toasters, sandwich grills and microwave ovens. There are no towels with which to dry your hands on and nothing to wipe down the benches. (And there's no way of drying your hands in the toilets either!!!) Guests are meant to keep the place clean but there's only dish washing liquid and a sponge. The little spills converge and in the end you learn to accept the squalor.

They clean the kitchen with strong smelling disinfectant on the floor, spray and wipe down the benches in amongst your toast and cervical and vacuum the floor at 9am while guests are trying to have breakfast.

In the laundry, only half the washing machines work because the others are full of coins. The staff normally sell washing powder/liquid per wash but they were out of stock and didn't know when the new supply was due. The driers are free but there's no waste bin to put the lint from the filter in so everyone just throws it to the floor. It's the same race to the bottom in the kitchen.

There is a single hook on the back of the door in the shower cubicle and only broken or absent soap holders in the shower itself.

The room has no desk lamp. The only source of light is a fluorescent tube on the ceiling. I resorted to using the flashlight on my iPhone at night as I sat in my room in almost total darkness.

There are mosquitoes but no screens on the windows. No air conditioning means you have no choice in summer other that to sleep with the windows open. I slept with insect repellant on my exposed skin.

It's nice to stay in the university dorm. but one thing has to be clear: it is a HOSTEL, NOT A HOTEL. The rooms are essential, a bit dirty under the bed which makes you think they only clean wher you can see. toilets are fine but they are unisex and a little smelly. Staff was very friendly and helpful at any time. The position is a bit far from center and we recommend you to get a TAXI from the airport (it will cost around $30) while the train tkt costs $16 + $2.5 for the bus and then you have to walk to the hotel and if you don't know where it is, it's NOT VERY easy to find.

Stayed early December 2013.
Staff were pleasant. Room was clean. Shared bathrooms were also very clean, beware though as they are unisex - this didn't bother us but may bother some people. Parking was just within the Uni grounds, and we didn't have to pay due to the time. Great access to King St Newtown, and therefore public transport to anywhere in the city.
Will stay again.
Oh, and it is very much like Hogwarts.

Yes, it is very Harry Potter. The renovated rooms are very good.. no air con, just a fan but still very clean and comfortable. The unisex toilets and showers are very good quality. Beware of the rooms yet to be renovated though. Staff are very nice and helpful.

We stayed two nights and if we had not paid in advance would have walked out. On the plus side the location is convenient to King Street and its restaurants and the gardens are attractive. On the minus side it is poor value, there is no restaurant (even for breakfast), parking is expensive (especially as they overbook the paid spaces and there are free public spaces nearby), the staff (we saw two in total over the two days) appear to be overseas students and dress/behave accordingly, the rooms are furnished with pieces the Salvos would reject and doors slam all night (there are still students in residence). There is no room fridge or teamaking facility, in fact there are not even any glasses or cups in the rooms. This is not a hotel it is a college, empty during the vacation, and should be described and priced as such - as the university colleges do quite pleasantly in London.

Room Tip: Try somewhere else.
