“Good value for money”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

Can't beat Mariner's Court for value for money for accommodation in Sydney. It is a short, pleasant walk across the Domain into the city. Parking is very cheap and there are lots of places to eat nearby. The accommodation itself is basic, but everything you need is there and the beds are comfortable. Breakfast is generous considering that it is included in the price. The hotel definitely has an "institutional" feel about it (understandable since it was an ex seamens' home!) which can be a bit off putting, but once you get over that it is a great place to base yourself in Sydney.

Room Tip: Inner courtyard rooms may be a little quieter - outer rooms get a bit of street noise.

Having quickly realised how expensive it is to stay in Sydney we hit on this hotel in Wooloomooloo, 2 minutes walk from Harrys Cafe de Wheels , 5 from Finger Wharf, 15 mins from the Botanical Gardens. As mentioned in other reviews it was formerly a home for Naval
Personnell and it shows .. The rooms are big enough but had everything we needed, fridge tv tea/ coffee iron air-con and ceiling fan. The bathroom could do with updating as it was very tired looking but clean and functional enough. Our room was cleaned on the Saturday but not Sunday. Breakfast is offered in a largish dining room with a nice outside terrace , plentiful Continental, we were requested to clear our tables after we had eaten which we thought a bit odd . We were there over a weekend and didn't notice any noise it was fairly quiet. If you plan on walking your legs off seeing Sydney and are just looking for a clean bed and breakfast to sleep in then this hotel is Ok for that...

My family and I have stayed at Mariners many times, for many years, and if I were to rate it purely on position, I'd give it 5 stars. It is moments from Woolloomooloo wharf and a very short and pleasant walk to the Botanic Gardens, the Art Gallery, the Domain, the Opera House, Circular Quay, the city itself and Kings Cross. You want to be here, believe me.

What sends it spiralling down to 4 stars (not much of a downward spiral...) is the worn state of the rooms and the bathrooms. It's fairly ordinary, but it has everything you'll need. It's very secure. It's fairly quiet. The beds are comfortable enough. There are small balconies outside every room we've ever stayed in and your breakfast is perfectly adequate.

Richard, who has worked there for many many years, is always brimming with good humour and our children look forward to seeing him at breakfast every morning. The owners are helpful, the price is unbeatable, the parking is easy... and Harry De Wheels is virtually outside your door.

It's not a honeymoon getaway. But it's perfect if you're interested in exploring Sydney on foot and don't want to break the bank on upmarket accommodation. Spend the money you save here on treats elsewhere, as we do.

Stayed three nights October found the staff Jude and Craig to be wonderful and very helpful. Rooms were cleaned and serviced daily, Tea, coffee, shampoo soap etc topped up daily. ( Even in some 5 star hotels we have not found that.) The beds are very wide, king doubles. The security was very good, a double door system. Vehicle security in the locked underground garage gave peace of mind. For those without cars the bus stop is at the end of the short street. Very close to food venues, and activities. Continental Breakfast was good, could be eaten inside, or out on the varandah in the morning sun. For inner Sydney the cost is very reasonable.
Would I stay there again, YES. Will I tell all my friends YES.

Positives: Great location in Woolloomooloo, very clean and staff seem nice and helpful.
Negatives: Pretty sure it was an aged care facility (or still is in parts) which is fine but there has been no redecorating since it changed to a hotel. There are still the panic buttons on the walls, railings everywhere and the is furniture exactly what was in the place where i visited my great aunt. The continental breakfast was fine, but also seems to be the same menu as when it was a home, so it could do with some updating like the inclusion of some pastries, etc..
Overall, for $150 it is probably one of the cheapest places to stay in that area, but it seemed steep for what we got. If you need to be in Woolloomooloo and are not spending time in your room its fine.

We have stayed at Mariners Court many times, and find it clean and safe with the staff always friendly and helpful. It is in an excellent position where you can walk to Wooloomooloo and surrounds easily, the Botanic Gardens or even the city, (if you're keen). Underground secure parking is a bonus, but don't forget to book it because there are limited spaces. The rooms aren't enormous, but for the price which includes a continental breakfast, it's difficult to go past this Hotel.

Room Tip: Don't forget to close windows if you want a full nights sleep.

My wife and I stayed 4 nights in Sept 2012. The hotel was everything that we had hoped for. The manager Craig was very pleasant and helpful. The rooms are clean and nicely painted. Breakfast is very good. We walked 5 minutes to the hop on-hop off buss. The walk to the city center and Circular Quay was about 20 minutes, through the park. We ate at the Frisco Hotel, less than a minute walk away. The dining room is upstairs. The specials are $15 to $18 if you are on a budget, and pretty good. We were very pleased with the hotel stay.

Room Tip: We had a small balcony. There was no great view, but it was still nice to sit out there with a cockt...
