“Awesomely different”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 22, 2014

Spent Easter weekend at 1888. We wanted a different experience than the usual chains, and took advice from this website - we were not disappointed!! It has personality and charm, and our friend commented on how lovely and unique it is when they dropped us off. Location is awesome, and the room was so clean and the bed so comfortable! Staff were so lovely - we tried a suggestion for a local wine bar and were so impressed - great local knowledge. Staff at reception had a handy list of restaurants open on the Easter weekend, which was above and beyond any experience I have had at a chain hotel. The restaurant/bar staff were also great suggesting drinks - we had a perfect evening in the lobby! We had a tiny problem with our toilet, and reception were straight on it, and offered to move us. It speaks volumes about this hotel that we were so happy in our room, and with the cleanliness of the bathrooms in the foyer that we decided not to move. Awesome value and such personality. A hotel with soul, which we will stay at whenever we go to Sydney!

All too often one feels like just a number when staying in a big city hotel. You will never feel that way here. Only 90 rooms, very inventive adaption of an old warehouse builiding, plus staff who clearly like to come to work each day, all add up to a fantastic stay. Yes, it is very quirky and that may not be to everyones taste, but I would doubt you would find a better hotel in Sydney, given it's location and the quality product they offer. On top of that, the room prices are reasonable for what you get.

We had a family stay over Easter, taking both a King Delux and a Shoebox room. Our adult daughter enjoyed her Shoebox, being just large enough for one person (can take 2 people if only one suitcase), but with all the same facilities of our King Delux. Our KD was 421 on the very top floor (lets call it floor 4 1/2, as we had a flight of stairs up from the lift on the 4th floor). This room is located behind the old top facade of the original building. Now this fact gave it a very quirky appearance. We had glass floor to ceiling windows throughout, including the shower in the bathroom. There was approx 1 metre between our windows and the old brick wall of the building. Obviously no view, but really private and quiet (no need to shut the curtains at night). Looking upwards you can still see the sky, so not like solitary confinement, just different. We loved it for our 4 nights and would stay in it again, but to people who worry about feeling closed in or want a view, just avoid 421, as they have plenty of other rooms.

Location is excellent. Walk to Star, or the ferry to Circular Quay. Light rail right across the street through the public carpark. Darling Harbour under 10 minutes walk for all its restaurants, plus the local streets have many as well. Less than 15 minutes walk across Pyrmont Bridge and you are in the heart of the CBD.

Almost every staff member we encountered was friendly and keen to know what we were doing and how could they assist us any way to enjoy our stay more. Breakfast was reasonable in both options and price. We had intended to eat at the hotel on our last morning, but we encountered the only staff member in our whole stay who seemed to have her mind elsewhere. Despite welcoming us into the breakfast area, she then did not come near us for the 10 minutes we waited to give our order. Given that the breakfast area had only 1 person in it besides us, clearly she was not run off her feet. We eventually gave up and left, with her looking at us while we walked out. Upon checkout, when asked if we had breakfast that morning, I mentioned why there was none on the bill and the person at reception first apologised and then said they would follow up with that staff member. To their credit, as we left for the airport, we saw that reception person hobbling (he was wearing a knee brace) over to the breakfast area and speaking with that other staff member. These guys do care!

Stay here. Enjoy, we did and we will be back.

Dear Frozen,

Thank you so much for such a great review, great because of your kind comments but also great for your comment which can help us do an even better job.

Of course I was sad to read of your breakfast experience but was proud to learn how we responded to a mistake. I love room 421 too, it is large, quirky and filled with natural light. Your comments are spot on as this is one of our most unique rooms and not everyone will love it as much as us.

I am so pleased you had a fantastic stay, come back soon!

Warm regards,
Andrew Adams-Smith

I was looking for a nice hotel but wanted to avoid a huge chain spot. This was perfect. It's small, and the rooms are small, but the staff was great, the breakfast couldn't have been better, and it was to grab a drink at the bar. Loved the location too. For the price, I've never enjoyed a hotel experience more.

1888 offer a quirky alternative to the bog standard 4* chain hotels. The staff were very helpful, allowed you to drop your luggage when we arrived early and gave us a call when the room were ready. Location wise it's a stone's throw away from Darling Harbour and has plenty of shops and restaurant nearby. It's also perfectly located for the Sydney Fish market which is a must see if you go to Sydney, its only 5mins walk and you get the best seafood for half the price. The rooms are of high standard with comfy beds but not many rooms has baths. We stayed in a King size room and that wasn't very big so the box rooms must be tiny. Free WiFi is a nice touch.

Dear TwhChung,

Thank you for your kind words about our perfect location, our unique style, comfy beds and wonderful team. The free Wi-Fi is one of our many features which ensures that we stand out from "the bog standard" hotels, I am pleased that you appreciated it.

On your next visit if you would like a bath simply book a Junior Suite and you will enjoy more space in the room and one of our stunning free standing baths in the bathroom.

Thank you for visiting and we look forward to seeing you again.

This is the first review I have actually ever written because the staff at 1888 really deserve it. We stayed for 4 night over Easter weekend.
From the moment we arrived the guys on the front desk were great. We had an early flight into Sydney and our room wasn't quite ready, so they suggested some great places to go to and things to do while we were waiting.
Jarome at the bar is possibly the nicest, easiest to talk too and best bartender we have ever had. He also makes some great cocktails and really got each night off to a good start.
Overall the staff really make this hotel great. The rooms aren't huge (we stayed in a king room) but the Decor and layout make it work. Love the design of the bathroom and anti fog mirrors!!
My only suggestion to improve would be to have some bathrobes.
We will definitely be staying again on our next trip.
Please pass on our thanks to Jarome for making us feel at home :)

Dear Larissa,

We are very happy that the first review you write is about 1888 Hotel. Thank you for your wonderful words

it was great to read that the staff helped your feel at home! Jerome does make some great cocktails and I will pass on your praise to him. Thank you for your comments about the bathrobes, as an extra touch of luxury they are supplied in all our suites with comfy slippers. However if you like our King rooms the best just let me know when you next make a reservation and we will ensure there are fluffy bathrobes waiting for you!

I stayed for two nights at the 1888 Hotel in Sydney in April, 2014. This is one of the best hotels I've stayed in over the past two years. I travel alot on business and am unable to stay in the types of hotels I would really like to stay in becuase of my budget. As a result, I spend an inordinate amount of time trying to find excellent hotels with a good value for the dollar spent. The 1888 hotel absolutely meets that challenge.

The hotel itself has quite a bit of character and I greatly enjoyed the overall ambiance of the hotel. The location is quite good. I would not call it right in the middle of the city action but it is on the comfortable fringe of the action, which is very accessible from this location.

The breakfasts were quite good and were a great way to load up on energy before heading out for the day.

Finally, the staff was very helpful with the many questions that I seemed to ask. I will definitely stay at the 1888 hotel when I am in Sydney the next time.

What a wonderful new edition to Sydney is 1888 Hotel! It is only 10 months old but could teach some of the older, more established hotels in Sydney a thing or two about service. It is close to Darling Harbour but far enough away to escape the noise and hustle. It has been thoughtfully renovated leaving some of the original features of the woodshed in tact. The rooms are cosy, the breakfast is good value and very tasty and Happy Hour is a great opportunity to taste some great Australian wines and beer. All the staff were warm and friendly. We will definitely return.
