We turned up to this restaurant very, very late and instead of telling us they were about to close, the treated us with civility. I have eaten a lot of Chinese meals in my time (including in China) and this was by far the very best we have ever eaten. Unlike most Chinese restaurants this place is not a sea of red and gold. They are small on decor and big on food. Will definitely be going again, the next time I'm in Sydney. Highly recommended.

Customers who have been to several Northern Chinese restaurants across Sydney will most likely have adjusted their expectations of what you usually find in such a place, but just in case you've never been to one, here is a quick intro:

A Northern Chinese restaurant is about food, not about decor, ambience or service. If you want to have a nice dinner where waitors make you feel welcome and cater for you in an educated and friendly manner, this is definitely not your type of restaurant. I often see reviewers tear them to pieces, but I think they're missing the point - it's simply a different style.
What you get in a good Northern Chinese restaurant, and I would call the Chinatown Noodle King among them, is rich yummy food, and lots of it, for a small price.
My favourites in this place are the hand-made noodles with black bean and minced meat sauce, and the pan-fried dumplings. We're talking 16 dumplings for less than $10! So if you're hungry, and you love carbs as much as I do, this place is perfect.
The place is probably a little too short on service - although there are usually about 5 employees saying hello to you when you walk in, once you sit down at your table, they don't give you any chilli or soy sauce or vinegar, or anything as basic as a spoon. You'll have to ask for each item, and probably several times because many staff members don't speak much English apart from the items on the menu.
On the plus side, the place is surprisingly spacious once you're inside, so bringing friends is less of a problem than in many other comparable establishments.

This place is not as good as "Chinese Noodle House" or "Sea Bay", but it's definitely yummy and will fill you up nicely.
