This was my second stay in the hotel (first one on february 2008) and it's a great value for a perfect location.I did a good reserch and you cannot find anything else so cheap and so nice in The Rock. People are friendly, breakfast very good, rooms and bath huge and you can avoid noises by getting a room at the back and on high floors.Go for it!

This hotel was situated in Sydney 'The Rocks', about 5 mins from the Opera House and right by the Sydney Bridge. We could see the Sydney Bridge Climbers starting their climb from our bathroom window. The Rocks Market is held every weekend literally right outside the hotel. The hotel is above an Irish pub where you get a lovely cooked breakfast every morning all included. Felt very safe, very reasonably priced and lovely staff.

This is a no frills hotel in a great location. It's irish themed and run, so laid back is the order of the day. The rooms are basic but clean. The owners hands are tied regarding improvements to windows etc, due to stringent regulations covering listed buildings in the area. Therefore you can expect a little noise from the outside market on weekend mornings. The friendliness of the staff and management more than make up for a little noise! The food served is excellent and reasonably priced, and overall, I found the Mercantile great value for money.

If you are looking for reasonably priced accommodation but don't want to sacrifice location in Sydney city centre then the Mercantile is your place!! It’s all about location, location, location! The Mercantile is located in the heart of the rocks about a 5 min walk to circular quay. The rooms are located above an Irish pub so make sure to ask to be on or above the 2nd floor as can be quite noisy however will stop about midnight. The rooms are very basic, but practical and clean. I would recommend not to go for the rooms with spa and toilet facilities, it’s not worth it. My room was on the 2nd floor and had shared toilet facilities, I say shared however there is a WC, basin and shower room outside almost every room. It felt like an en-suite as each room used there own facilities. The bathrooms looked like they had been renovated; they were very clean and modern. Towels are provided. There is a complimentary Irish breakfast every morning, which is basically just a fry up. There is a market every weekend on the same street the mercantile is on. I have heard that it can be noisy when the stalls are setting up in the morning, however if you get a room on the other side of the building should not be a problem. I never stayed at the weekend so never affected me. I was very happy with my stay at the Mercantile and would stay there again.

Stayed in this hotel in October 2008 with 3 girl friends. The hotel has a great location in Sydney, clean, comfortable and for a no frills very reasonably priced stay it is great. Lovely breakfast and friendly staff.

While visiting family in Melbourne, my wife and I took a short break up to Sydney to take in the sights, The Mercantile was booked for us and we loved it.
Its location in The Rocks gives wonderful access to Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, Circular Quay and the Botanical Gardens.
We had a double room with an ensuite bathroom with an enormous bath and it was clean and comfortable. The AC handled what we were assured was unseasonally hot weather (HOT!!) and the helpful and friendly staff made the stay very relaxed.
Other reviewers have made mention of the noise here, and given its location and the large bar on the premises I can see that it may be a problem, however I can honestly say that I did not notice anything and had the best nights sleep of the entire holiday. (Although that might be down to the fact the the children were still in Melbourne...)
Would I go back? Yes. Again and again.

The hotel is ideally situated within a short walking distance of the Sydney Harbor Bridge and Circular Quay. We got a room with shared bathroom and both were very clean and comfortable. The best part was the huge brekkie served up in the morning with juice or a huge cup of coffee. The trade off is that it is located right on top of a pub which got loud at night but usually calmed down latest by 1am. Try to get a room on the 3rd floor and, if possible, not facing the street because the George Street market sets up early Saturday morning and woke us up.
