The Mercantile Hotel
Ranked #109 of 181 Hotels in Sydney
Reviewed February 24, 2013

Let's start to say that this is not technically an hotel, but a pub with rooms. However, the location of the Mercantile, a few steps from Sydney Harbour Bridge, 5 minutes to Circular Quay and in the center of The Rocks, makes this a suitable opportunity for a no frills vacation in Sydney. There are rooms with common baths and also with ensuite bath. The rooms are clean, though a bit old in furnitures and especially windows. This particular is the only one really disappointing: the windows vibrate a bit with the car passing; considering that during the week end there is live music, you could consider that noise. Breakfast - continental or hot - served at the bar. Friendly staff.

Room Tip: Room not facing the street should be better in order to minimize the noise.

Great pub for a guinness in the Rocks(Schooners not pints though) Sit outside on a sunny day and watch the world go by or go there in the evening (particularly Sundays ) and listen to some good local music, some rollicking irish if you're lucky.6.50 for a guiness ,friendly irish bar staff,I love this place. The rocks is the best place in Sydney for a pub crawl ,and this place is a must. Also good for a rest when checking out the market on a Sunday, another thing you should do if you're around the harbour on a Sunday

Great location, it's in the Rocks Market, within walking distance of the Harbour. However, if your staying over the weekend don't plan on getting any sleep. The Irish Pub below has a new band every night and the sound permeates through the walls!

Room Tip: Stay here during the weeknight when it's quiet. Unless your a party animal yourself, forget it o...

Recently spent two nights at this quaint old Irish pub. It is located in a fabulous spot, The Rocks Craft Market actually on the doorstep Saturdays and Sundays. Other places of interest are within easy walking distance.
The room we stayed in was old but certainly clean. As mentioned in previous reviews, it is very noisy because of the live entertainment on the weekends, but if you are aware that this is going to be the case, you really shouldn't complain.
A cooked breakfast is included in the price, which is a bargain, given the location. Other meals are hearty and very tasty - don't go past the Steak and Guinness pie.
I would highly recommend this beaut old pub. We will certainly be going back there again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with an ensuite. Take ear plugs if you want to sleep earlier than 12.30 on weekends...

The Irish staff in this hotel are friendly and helpful.
The rooms are clean and very comfortable.
Plenty of communal bathrooms if you don't choose en suite.
The only problem is that it is a pub and is extremely noisy at weekends, however, if you get a room on the second floor at the back, the noise level is bearable.

Room Tip: Ask for a second floor room at the back, if you want quiet. This only applies at weekends

Couple running the establishment are wonderful...breakfasts are good but it is very noisey on the weekends because of the Irish Pub.

Room Tip: Pick a room not on the street side...too noisey.

For the price I really think you do ok. We got the room with the ensuite, and be honest you pay $150 per night, inc breakfast, to be right in the middle of the Rocks. The rooms are run down, but they are clean and the staff are terrific. Its a really friendly place to stay. BUT. If you want to sleep before 12:30 am you can pretty well forget it. We thought we would be safe from the noise by moving from a bedroom on the street to off the street but the Saturday night band played louder. And on Saturday morning they set up the market from 3am. Having said all that, if you want a drink or a meal or you want to listen to the band without staying at the hotel, then its well worth a visit.

Room Tip: not with street windows
