This is a lovely way to spend an evening in Sydney. As a local sydneysider it was amazing to learn about the gruesome slums that were the Rocks of the Victorian era - the Obersvatory Hill part had a particularly eerie yet beautiful aura.

Whilst it wasn't spine tingling its a nice different thing to do!

We were looking for a little bit of spook combined with some history. Boy, we got that and much more. You begin at the oldest surviving building in Sydney and go on a meandering, spirited walk through (sometimes otherwise inaccessible) areas of the Rocks learning about the first people to struggle to make a livable place out of this inhospitable, rocky land. You see many "ruins" of some of the original homes made of stone and learn a lot of history both of the area and also of the people, some of whom died under very mysterious or gruesome circumstances. If you're interested in it and like a good walk in the evening, it's definitely a "should do". Ivan was a great tour guide. He is interesting, knowledgeable and likes to interact with his guests. You do NOT end up where you start, but Ivan is happy to give you very good directions to go wherever you need or want to go after the tour.

Some very unfair reviews on here. It's true that this isn't the most amazing or enthralling experience, but you need to take it for what it is. If you want an in depth historical walking tour of Sydney then look somewhere else, but if you want a bit of fun, coupled with interesting historical facts and the odd spooky story, then this is the trip for you.
Sadly our guide seemed to be suffering under the pressure of the bad reviews and almost apologised his way through it.
Also a little disappointing to find out while you are on a tour (ie the North Side tour) and standing outside a venue that it is visited on the South side tour, perhaps the guides should keep that to themselves.
I think with a few script tweaks, and some regained confidence, this could be a cracking night out.
That's why I think that $45 is a bit expensive, and clearly the free drink no longer exists as there was no mention of it.
Give it a go, and leave some constructive feedback. Things will only improve if people know what's wrong.

This tour was quiet frankly a complete waist of time and money..

They started by giving us all a prop of some sort (I was given a rubber knife) that is part of one of the stories told on the trip, and then we were off.. It was a few hours of looking at windows and standing next to buildings while being told the story of that area.

I was expecting something a little more interesting and interactive.. We finished the tour not upset that we did it but very disappointed that it didn't even come close to being as exciting or interesting as they make out!!!

My final point is to expect people to make fun of the tour while you're on it. We have a large number of people pointing and laughing at the group because we where all holding some cheesy prop and being lead around by an old man in a cape!!!

The Ghost Tour of the rocks is an amazing trip into the history of Sydney. Although some of the stories may seem to be a little farfetched, this tour might be a little boring without the slight embellishments.
