“Love the Palms!”
Reviewed May 18, 2008

I stayed here for two months with my boyfriend in March and April.
I have read some reviews on the hostel after staying here and was quite surprised-i guess other travellers must have come at a bad time-as the hostel was clean when we arrived.

Our room had brand new beds and carpets, we also had a fridge and a tv, which was great for the price that we were paying as this seemed to be the cheapest hostel in the area.

On a few occasions i found it difficult to sleep because of the noise, but this was due to birthday parties etc. as for the rest of our time here we loved it.

Its a great chilled out place-which is strange for Kings Cross! The staff were pretty cool, and i we got free brekky which was awesome!

Overall a great place to stay Sydney

I read some favourable reviews about The Palms and since Sydney is really expensive for accommodation we wanted to stay as cheaply as we could. This was clearly not the best idea. My primary reason for booking was the fact that if we were to get a double room we were charged for the room and not per person as some hostels do.
We arrived early and were able to leave our backpacks while we went for breakfast. We were advised that check out was 10am so we would need to wait until then to get into our room as someone was still in it. We arrived back after 10 and I had expected that we might have to wait a bit for housekeeping to clean the room and make the bed after the other guests had left, however we were told that the room was ready for us now. Nothing had been cleaned up from the last person - the bed sheets, the rubbish, the squashed cockroaches. As we stood in disorientated horror (having not slept for 12 hours on a plane), the manager came in and changed the sheets on the bed. That was all the housekeeping we would have for the duration of our stay. To be honest, we slept in a lot so cleaning weren't able to get into the room HOWEVER judging from the rest of the hostel, I doubt much cleaning would be done anyway.
There were cockroaches everywhere, the carpets looked as if they had never been cleaned and the place was generally just disgusting.
Note that you need your own towels, you can't rent them or anything (annoying!).
I know that we weren't exactly paying for hotel standards but we had at least hoped for a clean room.

I think these other great reviews are pretty misleading - this is not a great place to stay. Perhaps it was because we came straight from NZ where most hostels are of a pretty decent standard but found this place grotty. When we arrived after travelling all day, we had to wait an hour for the manager to arrive to check us in - another couple who were also waiting had tried to call him and he kept saying he'd be back anytime and wasn't. The manager also gave us some duff advice on how to get to Bondi and sent us to the wrong bus stop. I think this is a 'live in' hostel rather than one for visitors staying for a couple of days - who may want some tourist info. Most people there seemed to sit about all day watching TV so we guessed that most of them were staying long term. The kitchen looked pretty rank and lacking in cutlery etc so we ate out - the only good thing about staying somewhere not nice is that we saw a lot of Sydney as we never wanted to go back! Free internet (only one PC worked) and free brekkie and location not bad but wouldn't recommend otherwise.

Its a great place, free x-box, free internet, free breakfast. Really good communal atmosphere, a great place to start off and make friends. But Dan the steriod addicted manager can be a bit of a pain in the as*, especially when he interferes with Bandit when shes on heat.

But there again, you are in Oz land of the Aussie nobend. If you get a chance stay in the Monkeys den and play Rolf harris @ 5am. Everyone loves that.
