“A fun place to stay in Sydney”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2013

Located in the Kings Cross area, this hostel provides easy access to a grocery, the metro, clubs/bars etc. The staff was very friendly and will help out if you are unsure what to do. There is a good party atmosphere about the place, but they also do a decent job of keeping noise levels down later in the evening. On top of that, the hostel offers nightly activities, which provide a great chance to meet the other people staying there.
My one complaint would be that the kitchen is a bit small and only has one sink, which makes it hard to cook at peak times. It is slightly more expensive then the bigger hostels in Sydney, but the smaller size and better atmosphere make up for the cost.

Room Tip: If you can afford it, go for the 4 bed room instead of the 6.

I stayed at the Blue Parrot over NYE 2012-2013 and thought it was a fantastic place. I went solo and within the first day met great people who were in the same situation as myself (traveling solo). The hostel staff are great and the hostel itself is fantastic! Free wifi and computer use was a bonus. Overall a great experience, and definitely a perfect hostel for solo travellers.

Room Tip: Book a room that has an ensuite shower/bathroom.

I am just missing the blue parrot backpacker and his staff since I left it. Stayed there in oct and I would just recommend it to all my friend. The blue parrot is quite small if you look to the other big hostels you can have in sydney and maybe a bit more expensive but it's just value for what you pay. Effie and Sasha will welcome you with a big smile and just do their maximum to make you feel like home. The rooms have lockers and enough spaces for your stuff, the bathrooms are cleaned every day, you have a backyard ( just perfect for the summer and to make contact with the other travellers), you have free Internet, a lot of respect in the rooms ( when somebody is sleeping, we let him sleep which is not always the case in other hostels). I was just dreaming of the blue parrot when I was woofing in a farm and feel sooo gut when I came back :)
it's true that the long termers exclude a bit the newcomers but in the same time even if it's a really cosy nice small hostel, you can't expect neither that everyone speak to you and even if there is many long termers, you still have the other newcomers to make contact ! There will always be someone at the blue parrot who will became a friend :)

Stayed here for 5 nights in November. Good facilities and staff were excellent. Lots of long termers here exclude newcomers a little. But free wi fi and Internet are a huge plus! Area is party area but only 20 min walk to central sydney.

A nice & friendly hostel to stay. Good place to meet & mingle around with fellow travelers and to learn about Australia. Rooms are very basic. The Location is good & closer to a train station. The owners are good & had a friendly conversation with them.

Came here for 3 days in September and stayed 2 months! This hostel is a home from home, great tv room, comfy sofas, great courtyard and kitchen. The staff are amazing...Chris is Mr super cleaner, an absolute darling, Marc the friendly Irish chap who not only tries to help with trips and things to do, but genuinely cares that you get home after a night out, then finally we come to ollie the weekend manager, again another star who will always give you a friendly hug! I recommend this highly, one of the best hostels ever - a real credit to Sydney!

I chose Blue Parrot based on reading all the reviews on tripadvisor and particularly advice that it felt safe for girls travelling alone! And couldn't agree more! Very friendly and cosy hostel because it's relatively small so you get to know everyone's names especially with the hostel Friday night out! Rooms and bathrooms spotless, decent sized lockers in every room, nice communal areas and free wifi all day which I haven't come across in any other hostels. Close walking distance to the harbour and circular quay, do have to walk through Kings Cross area to get to some things but personally never had a problem there.
