While in Sydney we stayed at Westend Backers ,The staff working were very friendly and were always at hand to help us with our many questions about the city.
We did however feel the inside and outside of the building could do with a compleat overhaul ,however the staff made up for it with there happy smiles and hard work.
We will certainly go back.

I feel everyone needs to make the most of their stay here and totally take advantage of all the awesome FREE stuff that's included in your stay!!!
I arrived at Westend in June (stayed until October!) and immediately felt comfortable. The managers and reception staff were amazing and really helpful and the travel desk, WELL! They booked my east coast trip for me for a brilliant price and it included everything! From the Steve Irwin zoo, Frazer Island tour etc etc! (Sickest 3 weeks of my life!!) anyway...
I wondered into the kitchen/common area and immediately started speaking to some of the staff and long termers there. They were all very friendly and welcoming. The hostel also offers you unlimited free pasta and rice every day!
I checked into my room and found it great for the price (other hostels with such a great location, are usually a lot more expensive with the same kind of rooms, sometimes worse!) during my time, I stayed in a 4 share and also a 6 share. I found both rooms sufficiently spacious and homey!

Not only is the hostel filled with the best staff ever, but every night there is an entertainment schedule! These nights out include free entry and complimentary drink everywhere, free GOON every single night in the kitchen common area before going out! You get free pizza one night, extra free drinks for playing drinking games another night, free pool comps with $50 bar tab prizes, free wedges, cheese and crackers and literally goon goon goon!!! It's such an awesome place to be if you're tight on money - free food all the time and free alcohol! What more could you want as a backpacker!! They also run a beach BBQ once a week which is awesome as it's all free and you get to spend the day in the sun!

I would recommend this hostel to everyone as it's right in central Sydney and close to EVERYTHING. Great atmosphere and great people. I have left to do my farming but as soon as I'm done, I'm straight back to Westend!!!!

Love you all guys and see you soon!!!! :) <3 xxx

Upon arriving late in Sydney without booking a hostel on a Friday night the only place we managed to find with space was a triple room here for $105 dollars. I expected as this was the most expensive night so far of my year of travels that it would be at least a nice room for that but it was a dirty horrible rank empty space with a double bed attatched to a bunk bed.

The door to the toilet was a big wooden thing on rails you couldnt even pull across properly so for $105 i couldn't even poo without my roommate watching.

Only one tempremental lift for all 13 floors. The staff kept holding it at their floor (the top one) with no consideration for the paying guests and were quite sarcastic to us when we arrived.

Big communal kitchen but weird athmosphere. One man walked in bleeding having just been punched in the face.

For the money one of the worst places I've ever stayed.

Room Tip: Stay in a different hostel

Thank you for your recent review.
We are an extremely busy hostel and I ensure you that if you informed us your door needed maintenance this would have been looked after straight away.
We have made sure this door has now been fixed and we hope that you enjoy the rest of your travels.

Thank you

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Westend during our time in Sydney and were very disappointed. As a seemingly large chain with hostels all over the world I would expect the facilities and services to be far superior to what was offered. Upon arriving we were told to store our luggage in the luggage room, which was down two steep flights of stairs in the basement. I would have been unable to get my luggage downstairs, let alone back up again, without the help of someone strong enough to do so. The entire lobby and reception area smelt like cat urine (unless the staff had sprayed air freshener) and the sofa area was covered in suspicious-looking stains.

There was only one lift catering to 13 floors and every time we wanted to return to our room the wait was, at best, 5 minutes. The private room we stayed in seemed generally dirty and unkempt and the bathroom area was covered in mould. The mattress was intolerably uncomfortable so, both with back pain, we were forced to sleep across the width of the bed. The mattress springs also squeaked with even the slightest movement.

During the night the entrance door was left open with no security attendance. The guest kitchen was incredibly messy and not properly equipped at all. Though we understand that dishes accumulate during peak meal times, there was no dishwashing detergent to properly clean dishes and every tea towel was saturated or dirty. Perhaps this discouraged guests from washing dishes or, it was simply a result of the complete lack of signage requesting them to do so. The kitchen was incredibly well equipped with dirty pans, however, seemed to lack every other necessary cooking utensil and we were unable to find even one fork.

The only positive thing about the hostel was the location and the friendly staff, however, the quality of the facilities and services were disappointing and, compared with other hostels (in similar localities) the hostel did no.

Thank you for your recent review.
As we are in Central Sydney we must use all space so our lugguage room is based on the lower levels of our hostel and we ensure you it is cleaned and checked throughout the day.

I am also unsure why you would suggest that we do not have security on as we have licensed security as well as hostel staff working 24 hours a day.

We hope you enjoy the rest of your travels.
