We have been coming to this hotel for about 20 years. It has had several name changes over that time. It remains a top place to stay in Sydney; close to Circular Quay, The Rocks and the George Street – Pitt Street shopping precinct. We last stayed on a $149 last minute deal.

The staff are attentive and efficient. Breakfast is very good. The rooms are spacious, well maintained and clean. The beds in some rooms are two singles joined together; the join can be uncomfortable when cuddling your loved one. The parking station is always full with cars double parked.

Both hotel restaurants are very good. The Amora is in the CBD. The food court below the hotel is open during the week. Restaurants in The Rocks are open 27/4. Just across George Street, the revolving Restaurant at the top of Australia Square is entertaining and provides great views of the city. Aesop’s in Macquarie Street (10 minute walk) is fun if you like great Greek food, Zorbas Dance and smashing plates.

Things to do:
Take the 10-minute ferry ride and have lunch on Fort Dennison. Book for lunch.
Walk across the harbour bridge. You can come back by train, get on at Milsons Point off at Wynard. The trains run every 10 minutes. It is a 5 minute walk back to the hotel.
Walk around The Rocks.
Take a tour of the Opera House.
See a movie at Dendy Quays.
Take the glass lift from the Circular Quay concourse, near the Coca Cola building, up to the Cahill Expressway. This provides a fantastic view of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, especially at night.
The Justice & Police Museum is close by, as is the Museum of Sydney and Art Gallery of NSW. Hyde Park Barracks is worth a visit.
It is a ½ hour walk to the Powerhouse Museum, Maritime Museum and Sydney Aquarium.
Take a ferry to Manly. If you have all day, take the bus to Palm Beach.
Take an inner harbour ferry to anywhere; Watsons Bay or Balmain.

Got a great room via a mystery room deal - ended up on the 10th floor facing Margaret/George Street. Room was clean and roomy, bathroom was fabulous and staff provided an exemplary service. The reason I say York st is the best approach is Jamison via George st is at a 45 degree angle and if you aren't fit and are dragging bags it is a real workout!! If you like chocolate there is a Lindt cafe nearby. If you are there on a weekend because it is the business district the food options become more limited than during the week. The fridge has enough room to put basic supplies in without affecting mini-bar (and the mini-bar isn't sensor driven). Nice selection of teas and hot chocolate. Level 1 smells great because of the spa there. I agree with comments about the bed but don't bother with the chiro pillow unless you like really low ones.

This is a solid 4 star hotel, but not over the top luxury. This felt like more of a good business hotel than a vacation hotel and was located in the heart of the central business district, accordingly. However we felt comfortable there, it was in a good location for us as first time Sydney visitors, and we got a good deal on it through a credit card points program. We were high up, on the 34th floor, looking directly across the street at some office building. At a 45 degree angle we could then see the harbor in both directions, so theoretically we had a harbor view and could see sunrise and sundown but it was tempered by the fact that it also seemed like the people at the office building late could also look into our room so we really had to close our blind rather than leaving it open to view the city at night. If a view over Sydney is important, then take care which direction you'll be facing (not sure if the other directions didn't look into office buildings) or try a different hotel. The room wasn't overly spacious so if you bring lots of luggage you might have to step over it more than you'd prefer. The room has all the needed amenities including real coffee and a French press coffee pot rather than instant coffee. The bed was quite comfortable, and they had a "pillow menu" and we got some great down pillows which was nice. We paid extra to have the higher floor and get membership in the club on the 31st floor which included drinks and hors doeurves each evening and breakfast each morning. The breakfast was standard continental fare and not great - we ate it only once and went out the other days. We partook of drinks 3 evenings so we got some value out of it, but I wouldn't buy it again from this hotel. Location was outstanding for people like us willing to walk just a bit - very central in relation to the Quay, Rocks, Botanical Gardens, Central Business District. There was also a subway station directly below the hotel, but be aware the the entry just there isn't always open so you'll have to figure out the main entrance about a block away for entry during evening and morning hours.

Me and my mate stayed here for five nights. The title says it all.

You can get some great deals on room rates if you search around.

Tip: forget the hotel breakfast and head down to Bistroteque a few steps away from the hotel towards George Street. We went there every morning - great food and great staff.

We have stayed at The Amora several times including a recent stay for a Business trip. Our last stay was a spur of the moment decision for a Saturday night,so we booked directly with the hotel, our rate including the Seafood buffet for 2.
We were fortunate enough to be upgraded to a Park View Suite with separate living area and we were really impressed.
The standout features of this hotel are the friendly service from all staff and its ideal location,oh and the food at the Seafood Buffet was excellent.
