“Great Hotel is a great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2013

Stayed four days while on Holiday stopover in Sydney.
From going into reception to booking out it was a great experience with helpful courteous staff. Cannot give five stars as we did not use the restaurant or bar facilities
Housekeeping was excellent and the room spotlessly cleaned each day.
We had a discounted deal and the value was very good.
Free wifi an added bonus.
Immediately adjacent to Wynyard station where the train to the airport is an easy comfortable ride.
Recommended

Room Tip: Ask for a room on as high a floor as possible, some have great views towards the harbour

The Amora is rated as a five star hotel. However, we found it to be a little too hi-tech for our tastes. Our room and bath appeared very stark, the decor was primarily black, white and gray, the lighting was complicated, and the demeanor of the employees was a chilly as the rooms appeared. The location was excellent, located 1 minute (downhill) to George Street. Our pillows were not comfortable, and we were offered a "pillow menu", but these were not an;y improvement. The elevator, which required the use of the room key to operate, seemed to have a mind of its own.

Room Tip: we were on the 5th floor (out of 32) - with no view, other than other hi-rise buildings

Service- Below average. Time after time my stay at Amora makes me feel like i have overpaid for a 5 star experience.

Room service mishap and miscommunications come one after another, all of which have been recorded on my account at the hotel.

The list is really not a reflection on what service and value at a 5 star hotel should be.

I have been upgraded time after time at Amora Jamison, but quite frankly i wouldn't at the moment reccomend the Amora experience to any curious travellers.

I have gotten to know the managers (Morning, day and Night) and the Restaurant manager from the amount of times i have had to call through to report a inconvenince caused by either room service or staff that wander the floor's of the hotel.

There seem's to be clear cut communication issues with the staff at Jamison and quite often as the guest-i have paid the quite HEFTY price of being stuck in the middle of it.

I expect a relaxing experience that provides value for money, amazing sleep quality and one that if a mistake has been made-this mistake is not only rectified but the customer inconvenienced by this orignally is taken care of next time around-not subject to further mishaps.

I see Jamison have a representive of the company- the general manager i believe, replying to customers reviews here on the site. Please feel free to have a look at my record to garner further detail around the experiences i have described and contact me directly with any inquiries.

I plan to return to the Jamison hotel to give them one more chance to rectify these problems and provide the advertised five star quality of stay. I have a complimentary upgrade to the Park suite next time around and provided everything goes well-i will be more than happy to endorse the brand and compliment them in fixing up the obvious issues they experience.

Kind Regards,
Jack.

Room Tip: Will be getting a complimentary upgrade to the Jamison Park suite next time around.

Service - good.
Value - great, we got a discounted rate.
Sleep Quality - comfortable beds, quiet rooms.
Cleanliness - good.
Location - excellent location. It is located 1 minute walk from George St, which is the hub of Sydney CBD. The closest station is Wynyard. Can walk to Circular Quay/The Rocks area or towards the shopping area on Pitt St/Town Hall.
Rooms - small outdated rooms. The TV was very small and located in a small cupboard on the side of the room, making it awkward and uncomfortable to watch anything from bed.

This could be a really lovely hotel if the management took the time to address the "small irritations" that do not belong in a five star hotel. We stayed on Saturday night to attend a concert. I had held on to a letter sent from the Manager after our last stay some years ago offering a generous upgrade on our next stay. The Assistant Manager was very nice and although it was not possible at short notice to offer us the promised suite he did provide access to the club room with complimentary breakfast. My husband commented that it was a good thing we did not have to pay for the awful breakfast!

After we arrived we were invited to wait in the Club room until our room was ready and have tea and coffee. The hot water machine produced only steam so tea and coffee was sent to our room from the cafe. Of course we appreciated this gesture but this morning when we returned to the Club Room for breakfast the machine was still not working. The assistant offered to make the tea in the kitchen but unfortunately the water used had an unpleasant taste. Odd because Sydney has a good sweet water supply and the water in our room was tasteless.

Our room was very nice with a great view with harbour glimpses. The bathroom was equipped with a deep tub and separate shower. The towels were looking slightly worn and the woolen blanket in the cupboard had seen better days. The bed was very comfortable but no so the pillows. I think there may have been a pillow menu that I overlooked?

The lift has a mind of its own and for some reason would not register our selected floor until it had taken us to the ground floor first!

I must say that the staff were very pleasant and efficient. If the management would pay attention to small details this hotel could be a winner.

Room Tip: Room 2909.

The positives: It is in a good location near Circular Quay. It has easy access to Wynyard train station, with an exit from shopping centre above Wynyard station almost beside the hotel in Jamison Street. The room was clean. The shower gave plenty of hot flowing water. There is free LAN and wireless internet on offer (I did not try it so I cannot comment on its speed). The employees that I met were helpful.

The negatives: Considering the room rates, the room that I stayed in was getting tired and could do with a refresh. However, the conference rooms I used were quite good. The bed and pillow menu was ordinary. While the hotel cannot do anything about it, a number of adjacent rooms had noisy people coming and going all night (which really interrupted my sleep).

Even paying corporate rates, I thought the room was overpriced. I would definitely not pay full retail room rates and would suggest looking elsewhere at this price/room combination.

Room Tip: The higher the better to avoid street noise.

First stay at the Amora during a recent business trip, was impressed by the modern compact room and spacious bathroom with bath and shower. That is where it ended however, the in room dinner was delivered only slightly warm and the portion was small at $37 for a lamb curry.
On checkout I was called forward by a grumpy looking Anna who looked like she wanted to be somewhere else than at work, and by the serious look on all the other staff I encountered during my stay it seems this is the hotel mood, much like the somber photo of the "founding father" of the hotel group hanging on the foyer wall. I was then informed that the Amora charges for room service delivery!! Are you serious! Oh and as always there is the 1% credit card surcharge, I still cannot work out why hotels feel that with all the business they do, they need to add surcharges to credit card payments.
Final thoughts, basic queen size hotel room is worth no more than $250/night if you are able to bear all the grumpy faces around.
