We stayed in room 13 which was great for our family. There was a lot of space, a king bed, twin bunk beds and a queen bed. For my husband and 2 kids it was perfect. It was an easy walk to the Kings Cross train station but not in the more seedy part of town. The next street over had lots of reasonable restaurants. We were able to use the gym across the street for free which let us run on the treadmills with a view of the Harbor Bridge.
As mentioned in other reviews this is a pet friendly hotel and a highlight is meeting Bear and Slick, the resident dogs. My kids have told everyone that one of their favorite things in Sydney was playing with the dogs in the lobby. For a family who had recently lost their dog of 15 years, this was just what we needed. The staff is great and helpful. Overall a wonderful stay!

G'day Bestej,

Cheers so much for your very kind words about the Altamont - it was indeed a joy to have you and your family stay with us. I'm glad that you found our location great and good too that you took advantage of our Fitness First gym passes.
And....my dogs miss playing with your children - Bear was at the window watching you depart in the taxi. So, we all hope to see you again sometime in the harbour city.

Cheers from sunny Sydney...........Alan

We enjoyed our stay at the Altamount very much. The welcome was very warm from all staff-especially Rob who I am sure exceeded his duties as the main reception staff on duty on our arrival day.Kritan was very helpful with advice and friendly tips too.Informality mixed with genuine warmth means one feels at ease. The hotel has a very idiosyncratic character which is Bohemian with style..Low on superfluous frills but lovely comfortable beds with soft duvets, good pillows and sparkling white bedlinen.Good shower with delicious toiletries.Breakfast was simple but good-nice touch to have proper bread to slice rather than a packet loaf.Small details but that is where they have put the thought in that makes the difference. One felt-'at home', comfortable and cosy.It is very close to King's Cross railway staion so on Rob's advice we bought a multi-trip train, buses, ferries ticket so we were able to make the most of Sydney and its waterways easily.Lovely roof garden to relax on too.
The hotel was quieter than other reviews suggest.Area has every amenity-teenagers loved the Dominos pizza opposite ! No noise from that though. We would definitely choose the hotel again and feel it is our 'home from home' in Sydney.Good value and a good vibe.

Room Tip: our room 11 was very quiet but didn't have much natural light but as we were out all day the lac...

Hello Tessa

You have highlighted all the words I use myself when describing the Altamont......bohemian, genuine warm welcome, helpful tips, comfortable beds, attention to detail and 'home from home' atmosphere.
It really is a team effort, and we are all swelling with pride upon reading your review.

Cheers from us all...

My sister said "there is someone stabbed around Kings Cross every 200m".

Well, this wasn't on the Kings Cross end of that district at all ... but in a charming corner of darlinghurst with lots of restaurants and cafes within walking distance. No matter what google maps tells you, it is realistically a good half-hour's walk to Circular Quay ... assuming you don't get lost.

It's also 5mins from their sister hotel Kirketon.

About a 15min walk to the rental car companies on williams st - Thrifty, Budget, Bayswater, Hertz Europcar etc.

Our deluxe room had access to a small courtyard, but there isn't anything there. The bed was comfortable and the wifi was welcome.

The only thing which detracts is the rather cold nature of our bathroom ... and within the bathroom, the shower stall has no doors. It was charming, but cold.

Breakfast each morning was continental... and decent.

The biggest charm of the place are Alan and his two dogs (a mother and daughter). The two dogs are the absolute life of the waiting area when they are around.

Room Tip: ... book early.

Staying here is no brainer. You're on Darlinghurst Rd just near William st, so it's an easy walk into town or just wander down to Oxford St.
Concrete floor, rug, comfy bed (with varying pillows) teak furniture, even some re-used steel from a ship for a bench. The place is cool. it's not overdone, nor is it underdone....and for the price it's a steal!
You never know who you'll meet in the foyer!

Room Tip: Even if you don't open the door, a courtyard room is a plus.

Was recently there was 5 nights, and the hotel was kind enough to upgrade my room to a deluxe room for the duration i was there. What came as a plus was the thoughtfulness of the caretaker Mr Alan, who gave us another room because the original room that we were allocated to had been occupied the night before my a group of smokers. (although smoking was strictly prohibited in rooms). Rooms were nice and comfortable with daily cleaning. Located close enough to railway (King's Cross) yet far away from the more "messy part" of the area. Would strongly recommend it to people on a budget

This is a very comfortable well run and friendly hotel. Alan is a star. I slept well and it's a short run to the Opera House for the enthusiastic runners amongst you. I prefer leaving reviews via Feefo but made an exception on this occasion!
