“Eat here! Pick me! Eat here!”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

I have always loved Chinatown, always come here on my visits back home to Oz. Except this time I noticed a little more haggling to get you into their restaurants! But still good for a "yum- cha!"

“Lots of fun!”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

If you're ever needing to kill some time in the Sydney CBD or somewhere to just have lunch or dinner you can't go past Chinatown in my opinion. You can spend hours browsing Paddy's Markets, shopping in the factory outlets in Market City or browsing the aisles in one of the Asian supermarkets in the area.

It's not just Chinese food on offer here, there's Thai, Korean, Malaysian, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Japanese and more to be had in Chinatown. In addition, there's also several variants of Chinese cuisine on offer. There's RSL-style Australian Chinese, Cantonese, Shanghainese, Hainanese, Northern Chinese, Dongbei, Uighur, Taiwanese and Xi'an all on offer here.

There's restaurants to suit every price range, from hole in the wall cafeteria type joints where you can eat for $10 a head to fine dining at places like East Ocean. In addition, there's also four large food courts containing all types of authentic Asian cuisine at dirt cheap prices.

A tip though, i'd avoid the alfresco Chinese restaurants facing onto Dixon Street Mall between Hay and Goulburn Streets. They all tend to be overpriced tourist trap type places serving RSL style 'Chinese' food. If you want to eat alfresco, the restaurants on Dixon Street Mall above Goulburn Street are much better value, and closer to the real thing, not just a watered down Westernised version. If you're looking to eat even cheaper (ie, under $10 a meal), then i'd either recommend the food courts on Dixon Street, or the hole in the wall joints on Thomas Street. There's a particularly good hole in the wall place called 'Chinese Noodle Restaurant' located on Thomas Street, their dumplings are amazing, highly recommended.

In addition to restaurants, there's also a couple of Asian shopping centres, Market City, which is also home to a food court and factory outlets, and Sussex Centre, also home to a food court, both are fun to browse. There's also no shortage of Chinese grocery stores, butchers and bubble tea joints in this neighbourhood.

On Friday nights, there is a night market held in Dixon Street Mall. There's lots of ready to eat Asian snacks sold from street stalls, as well as the usual cheap toys, clothes and gifts you would expect from an Asian night market. Highly worth a visit, even if you don't plan on buying anything it's still fun to be among the buzz.

All in all, Chinatown is definately a must visit in Sydney!

“Great food, great shopping, great fun!”
Reviewed March 3, 2013

I love Chinatown! During the day you can try out the many little restaurants and cafes. But at night, Chinatown really comes alive! I visited on a Friday night, and it was abuzz with people, food, street stalls and loads of fun. It's a definite highlight of any stay in Sydney.

“Quite an extensive area”

There is something for everyone here, lots of choice. It is located more down the Central Railway end of town. A must for followers of Chinese food.
