Lovely looking exterior and well maintained for a train station. You can get 2 kinds of staff, great or most unhelpful. Aside from that, its a train station.

the station is 'functional' ... the main concourse is a big open space .. no heart or soul; signage is inadequate

Central Station isn't an attraction that you would need to go see when you are in Sydney, but if you arrive by public transport, this is where you could find yourself. The Station is big, with two levels and multiple platforms. Also, be aware that there are two concourses at different levels. The upper concourse is in the older original part of the station. If you arrive here, you will see the big roof, and wide walkways. And if you plan to take a tram then you stay at this level and take the exits on the right hand side (walking along the concourse towards the main entrance). The lower concourse is slightly more recent and much more compact. This is where the Airport train comes in. When you exit from this area you would need to take the escalator (on the left) to go up one level to catch a tram, or walk down the outside ramp to the street. For example, I arrived on a Murrays bus from Canberra and the stop is at the lower street level. I needed to go back to Eddy Ave (about 50 m), turn right and up the escalator to reach the tram station. As older railway stations go, this is a good example. It has ornate columns, and old world amenities. You will find eateries, some seating, public toilets, information services, and if you look you will find travel information for most services around Sydney. You will also find the some of Sydney's homeless, especially at night.

Central station is just that...central. The location is perfect for navigating your way around Sydney at just a few steps from Chinatown and super close to the YHA backpacker hostel you will always be able to navigate your way around.
