“Trendy atmosphere, excellent location”
Reviewed July 21, 2014

The hotel and rooms decoration is retro, trendy and colourful. The staff is extremely nice and attentive. QT is a real modern 5 star hotel. The location is also great, in the middle of Market Street, a few steps away from the shopping malls. In addition, I also had a haircut at the spa at the 1st floor and it was a good experience.

We come to the QT Sydney at least once a month as a treat. Everything about it is delightful!

The beds are RIDICULOUS! The hotel dark and sexy. The restaurant is flawless and the staff are great. It is the sort of hotel room that you just don't want to leave. So last stay, we didn't!

Room service, bottle of wine, a huge long soak in the tub and a movie. THAT is how to relax! Treat yourself with a mini-break at the QT. Worth every cent.

Hey Woogsworld,

Well aren't you an absolute delight?! Sounds as though QT Sydney was the absolute perfect place in which to relax and unwind. Nothing better than sinking into a bath and sipping on some champers.

Can't wait to see you at the hotel again.

My husband and I stayed here for just one night to celebrate ten years of being together. We chose the QT as we really loved the Art Series hotels in Melbourne and were looking for a similarly quirky boutique hotel here in Sydney. We hadn't heard of the QT before doing our research, but all the reviews were so positive that we just had to try it out for ourselves. It did not disappoint at all.

The QT is one of the most thoughtfully and beautifully designed hotels I've ever stepped into. It echoes every part of the building's history, from the lavish Art Deco style of the State Theatre to the vintage aura of the Gowings building. Yet it also does this in a way that is thoroughly modern.

Walking up to reception was an experience in itself, with their red-haired, bedecked-in-black "Director of Chaos" holding the lift open for us and the infamous elevators changing up the music to Daft Punk. Check-in was friendly, well-presented, professional and very efficient - the whole process couldn't have lasted more than 5 minutes. Clearly the QT's receptionists understand that guests just want to get to their room as soon as possible.

And with good reason - the rooms are stunning. As a friend of mine who had also stayed at the QT said afterwards, "It's weird... but cool." Everything was screaming out to be Instagrammed - from the crystal on display in orange-lit cabinets to the beautiful and quirky array of furniture set around the room. What I ended up being most impressed about was the hotel's lovely touch of hospitality: a welcome card congratulating us on our ten years together and a complimentary bottle of (delicious) wine with two glasses in an ice bucket. All too often, a hotel like the QT can rest its reputation on the novelty factor, but the staff here are clearly eager to please their guests and make their stay as comfortable as possible.

My husband and I stayed in a King Executive Room on the 9th floor which had a lovely view of QVB. The bed was extremely comfortable - I had my best night's sleep in ages. The bathroom is also to die for, with the giant bath being the highlight.

Just a tip - if you are planning to book with the QT, you're better off becoming a member and booking on the website than going through Wotif, Expedia, etc. You get a very good discount and complimentary drinks (which unfortunately we didn't get to claim), and there's always that incentive to return.

But who are we kidding? We're definitely going back. You don't need any more incentive to return other than the QT itself.

Room Tip: Choose a King Executive Room - they're not the largest but they are gorgeous.

Unique, quirky, lush with vibrant atmosphere. All staff were attentive, professional and happy, eager to please which was refreshing. The food in the restaurant could not be faulted and although the drinks in the bar were pricey, they were also of high quality. The only thing that bothered me was the lighting which was quite dark throughout the whole hotel and in the room and bathroom. That said though, I can't wait to go back, the location is amazing too.

Hi Conjolin,

Thanks so much for a brilliant review of Gowings Bar and Grill. It sounds as thought we hit all the righty notes for your reunion with friends which makes us really happy!

Thanks also for the note on the lighting. Will make sure to check it out and make any necessary adjustments.

I feel a very unusual sensation – if it is not indigestion, I think it must be gratitude.

My wife and I stayed here for three nights at the end of short trip to Australia for a wedding, I had lived in Sydney for 7 years before so I knew the location was going to be excellent, and it was.

The hotel itself we loved, from the quirky outfits of the door staff, to the immaculate art-décor cum show-biz glamour of the reception area. The elevators are a bit of a trip, some electronic magic knows if you are alone or with company and changes the music accordingly. Fun, but awkward if it selects Barry White's Can't Get Enough of Your Love for you and you are sharing the ride with someone other then your spouse!

We'd upgraded to a larger room, it was nice and well decorated with comfy bed, ready-to-make cocktails, and a large bathroom. Despite being large, the bathroom was not what we had expected, it was a wet room with no separation, this meant everything got soaked (including the towels we needed to dry ourselves with). It also did not have a bath, on investigation, despite an upgrade (and what was shown in the pictures) we didn't have a room type with the bath. Normally I don't care for baths, my wife does however and had been looking forward to it. The other thing to be aware of is the rooms are very dark, our window faced a wall only a metre away. So not just no view, but very little light. Not a problem unless you plan to spend extended periods in the room, but don't expect to soak in a city or harbour vista.

The restaurant and bar at Gowings was great, I found the drink selection and the service to be good. It was clearly a popular place with a lot of stylish young professionals enjoying a few drinks after a day's work in the city, we assimilated well. Breakfast which we took here was very good (and a la cart). Disappointingly we were unable to have dinner, they were booked out every night we were there. This I found irritating, I've never before stayed in a hotel where tables were not put aside for hotel guests. Apparently that is common at QT, I guess as its a trendy place to dine and they want to maximise their turnover. Fair enough, but tell me when I make the booking so I can either reserve a table or be prepared. Mine is a common expectation.

Fortunately, due to the good location, it's a short stroll to Pitt St Mall which has a number of great places to get a quick meal (we ended up at Jones the Grocers), and Sydney is not short of Michelin Starred restaurants, if that is your thing.

Lastly I indulged in a wet-shave at the Spa. Don't waste your time. It was long on theatre, short on delivery. The experience felt all very nostalgic for the 1920's, the barber, a young Aussie was entertaining, but I left with tufts of hair and not a particularly close shave. You can get a much better (and probably more authentic) result for a fraction of the price at a local gents salon.

Would I stay here again? Absolutely, for a holiday, and with a prior reservation at the restaurant. For business, I'd head somewhere with a more conducive working space in the room and a view to gaze at during down-time between meetings.

Room Tip: You'll need to be very specific if you want a view and / or a bath tub. Best advise: take any r...

Hi WearyBusinessNomad,

Awesome shout out from a Senior Contributor. Great detail on the overall experience and it sounds as though you really dove in and enjoyed everything that the hotel had to offer.

So sorry about the shave and not being able to get a booking at Gowings during your stay. It is really busy and bookings are essential. As it sits within the hotel, the common assumption is that it is the hotel restaurant, rather than an independent dining establishment. We are looking into way to ease this booking and info process to avoid disappointment.

We really appreciate your even and well rounded review. It will give travellers great insight into the hotel.

Spend 2 nights in a corner king suite. Great room and very quiet for a busy street. Well designed and plush bed (soft but like it that way). Bathroom great layout - bit dark for my wife to apply make up but no real problem. The hotel is such a nice change from the the standard 5 star hotels and the quirky touches make it a pleasant place to relax. Had a "Bond" shave from the Welsh barber (Kris) the barber which was lovely and relaxing. The bar is a nice place to have some predinner drinks. All in all well recommended if you want something different for a good price (we booked a room + spa package).
