Price was not too bad for a twin room with ensuite. The room was clean with fresh towels and nice sheets. We were surprised to find complimentary earplugs as well - and later found out this is because there is a club sharing a main wall with the backpackers, so you will have bass pumping through your room until around 2am every night (yes, even including Sundays).
Had we known this when booking we would have stayed elsewhere. Hard to enjoy a big bed with nice sheets when you're unable to get any sleep at all.
The TV remote didn't work either - dead batteries - and despite repeated attempts to have staff rectify this they never did and when on counter always seemed too busy chatting to people to help paying customers.
If you're planning on not sleeping and getting hardly any service then definitely come here.

Room Tip: Only book here if you plan not to sleep.

This was our second stay at Base. We stayed 4 nights. We stay here when we go to Sydney because the location is fantastic and we save a few dollars by staying at a backpackers as opposed to $400+ a night in a hotel in the same location.
We stay in the double room with an en suite. The room and en suite is always clean. There is some obvious wear and tear (scuffs on the walls/crack in the toilet seat) but for the price we felt comfortable. Yes there is a night club that plays music loud every night but we're heavy sleepers so we don't mind. I thought it was cute that there was ear plugs provided on the pillows.
Town Hall station is literally across the road and Cockle Bay & Darling Harbour is a block away. You couldn't find a better location.
The only cons were that they only provide 3 pillows for a King size bed, you need to ask for a remote if you wish to use the TV in the room and our air conditioner turned itself on and off every couple of minutes.
If you choose to spend most of your time travelling around Sydney and need somewhere to crash it's perfect. I wouldn't recommend to light sleepers or travellers who like to spend a fair bit of time in their room.

I stayed here for 3 nights in November... it's the first hostel I have ever stayed in so at first I didn't think it was too bad. The room was clean and basic. The bathrooms were clean and basic. The bar on the ground floor was SO loud you could hear the thumping until the early hours, which was really annoying as I was very jetlagged and had early starts.

Other than that it was a good location and a good place to stay at before beginning a trip around Aus. It was unfortunately the least nicest hostel I stayed in during the six weeks I was in Aus.

Base Sydney is good if you are new to Australia there are alot of rooms full of backpackers so it is good to meet new people, it is very loud at night of the 1st floor because of the scary canary next door, i stayed on both the 1st and the 4th and the 4th was much preferred, the toilets on floor 1 were not to be desired but on the 4th were alot better and the showers worked better on the 4th, the kitchen was ok, laundry was good, internet access was good through global gossip. If your backpacking i would recommend.

Room Tip: floor four for a decent nights sleep

I went there in October and i stayed 4 days in this backpacker just when i arrived in australia. If we compare with my others experiences, it's clean. i shared my room with 5 people.
It's just there is a bar/pub just under your room i was on the 3rd floor and i didn't sleep till 3am, after 40 hours without sleeping it's just terrible. Internet is also expensive. The bed are comfortable but when you can't sleep. The location is awesome in the city centre.
