I have stayed here each year for the past few years for 4 consecutive days - conference. I have always been a big fan and this time i remain a fan but there are a few things that i think need attention, simp,e things, like changing then shampoo/conditioner from the classy to the ho/hum motel style effort. Why hasn't the sofitel replaced their motel style bedside clocks with the iphone/ipad dock style i have had recently enjoyed at cheaper hotels in Brisbane and Melbourne. Additionally i am concerned that the service has fallen away a little. I phoned the concierge twice. Once it rang out, the second time we waited for 20 minutes o ly to go downstairs and see them unoccupied and chatting. The desk officer picked up the phone and rang ( with point of view to the concierge dsk) and they chatted and ignored the call. He had to come out from behind the desk, walk over and speak to them personally, and he was very embarrassed doing so. This is the first time i have ever experienced poor service here and i was a tad shocked. In addition, when they did arrive, there was no chit chat, no asking how the stay was. he walked in, didn't say a word, picked up the bags and left, which is fine but in the past the concierge has always shown a great deal of respect and personality, had a polite conversation and showed regard for the guests. But the food remained outstanding and the general desk staff very helpful when checking in. I would recommend this hotel, but for the cost, if i was paying personally, id stay elsewhere. Sadly, i think this hotel has lost that something extra special that made you smile having stayed. They have lost their quality mojo, but it is still a great hotel.

Room Tip: Stay away from the lift- too noisy

They said we'd been upgraded but it was just an ordinary looking room, nothing flash. When we checked out they tried to charge us for the upgrade! At. Checkout time there were only two lifts working and we had to wait for ages on our floor lobby. Finally a manager appeared and we told him the problem. He took us through the rear of the floor to the service elevator to get down to reception. Kudos to him but pathetic to have two lifts inoperative. The only good bit about the hotel was the super comfy beds and the proximity to Circular Quay.

We stayed at the Sofitel for our mini honeymoon. We have stayed in other Sofitels (which were amazing) and other 5* hotels and this was by far the worst experience we had. We stayed in the "superior" room the first night and then "upgraded" to the Club room on the top floor. We thought we had paid for an upgraded room, however, the bath was not even 2ft off the ground. The standard room was of much better quality. As this was our honeymoon, we thought we should complain. What a waste of 2hours that was. We got sent back to our old room and then the bath plugs didn't fit. Everything at this hotel was below 5*, to say disappointed is an understatement. We will never stay at a Sofitel ever again, and will tell everybody to avoid it at all costs.

It's not up to standard for a 5 star hotel, which explains why other nearby 5-stars such as the Intercontinental and the Four Seasons had no rooms left but Sofitel had on short notice.

Some of my encounters :
- Housekeeping only found out on night 3 that they gave me 2 body washes and 0 shampoo
- badly moulded strawberry was not promptly removed from the fruit plate
- moth infestation; even after sending one goodbye, another appeared in my room the next day
- bathroom door consists of 2 panes and only 1 has a handle to open by design
- shower pressure is woefully weak and there's barely enough of a trickle to keep warm in a hot shower
- bellboy did not place my heavy luggage on the rack but just on the floor even though the rack sat in the closet
- insulation is lacking as I could hear people chatting in the hallway clearly in their normal voices well inside my room
- no phone on the desk or bathroom, but only beside the bed
- the central lighting switch does not turn off all the lights in the room
- light switches are very small and sticky so they don't flick very easily
- you still need to use the prehistoric hanging sign for DND
- hallways smell as ventilation is not sufficient
- if you face the street, either you face the neighbouring office windows' glare or another room at the hotel

Not all of it was doom and gloom. The concierge was quite professional and helpful. But I consider them an upper tier 3* and it's definitely not a business traveller-friendly hotel with many groups wandering about.
