“Fantastic location in central Sydney!”
Reviewed January 3, 2007

I stayed in HCH for 4 months from Jan-Apr 2001. I had a fantastic time here but maybe things have gone downhill since then by reading some of the other reviews! I was in a 6-bed dorm which was clean, we had clean bedding weekly, and had good views over the 'domain'. We used to watch the huge fruit-bats fly off each night from the Botanical gardens to feed.
The kitchen was ok, but its a backpackers hostel so you can't expect much else! Everyone had food storage containers in the fridges and sometimes things would go missing.
Very friendly though and I met loads of people and had an excellent time socially. Kings Cross is just round the corner with cheap bars & clubs.
Location - this was probably the best thing about this hostel - it was like a 5 minute walk to be in central Sydney, by the big cathedral, and probably 15 mins to the Opera House or Darling Harbour.

  • Liked — Location, everything in central Sydney is walkable from here.
  • Tips/Secrets — Backpackers hostel so don't expect it to be perfect!

This was my worst hostel experience ever. The hostel itself is in a dark, isolated area. Homeless people were sleeping outside the carpark opposite. There were lots of men hanging around in the nearby shrubbery. Eerie. The hostel was disorganized and our twin room wasn't available, so we had to do a couple of room changes. The rooms were filthy with food and drink bottles under the beds and in the cupboards. The blankets were torn. No nice features in rooms. The first night was so noisy with a TV blaring above, and other nights were noisy with people constantly going up and down the corridors talking. The night manager burst into our room at 3 am, forgetting he had already booked the room. The cleaner left our door unlocked and ajar, so security was shocking. The rooftop was closed. They did apologise, but the ongoing problems cast a shadow over our holiday. Best feature would be the nightly activities on offer.

honestly- we would never recommend anybody to stay there:
drunken guy was sleeping on the stairs;
shower and toiletts were never clean: we guess: too many travelling bachpackers working there and dont care a penny!; 50% of the toilets were out of order!
Rooms: neither clean nor spacious: needed to ask for vacuming...there were still hairs on the "fresh" bed cover and pillow cases
kitchen: dirty and not!! fully equipped!
They really need a constant staff to look after things!!!!

i stayed in this hostel for 3 months while i was in Sydney and think it's brilliant! The whole atmosphere in the hostel is so friendly and there is always people hanging out on the balconys chatting and drinking etc...a very sociable hostel, tv room is sooo comfy too. It was very clean and rooms are huge with views over the park, excellent location and close to knigs cross where you can go out along with all the other backpackers from the hostel. One of the most popular hostels in Sydney and is always fully booked, I couldn't disagree more with the above review. You have to stay here!!

This is one of the worst hostels I stayed in out of the 24 I stayed at during my 3 month trip. The first room we were given was so disgusting that we asked for another room. The 6-bed dorm we got next was so dirty, there were bugs crawling through the pile of crap left by previous backpackers in the corner. When we checked in, they didn't have any kitchen sets for us but still charged us a deposit until some showed up the next day. The brochure said there was a rooftop BBQ, which wasn't true. And watch your stuff, because someone stole my water bottle from the kitchen while I was sitting down eating! The kitchen hours were stupid and the location wasn't that great. Overall, this hostel is terrible.
