Owner description: A neighborhood with a Greenwich Village vibe, Newtown is a great place to stray from tourist traffic and duck into funky clothing, books, homewares and tea shops housed in Victorian-style buildings. The plentiful cafes and restaurants along King Street have earned the roadway the nickname of 'Eat Street.'

you can be whatever you want in Newtown. King street in the grooviest and loaded with cafe, bars and funky shops on both sides of King. it's a great place to hang out and host a lot of art and music events.

“Bohemian Vibe”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2013

Quirky suburb, bit seedy but great foodie venues. Down side is it is on a busy street (King St) and has some strange characters. Upside is that you can find a lot of funky stuff (even some cool Phantom comics) and there must be almost every nationality of food represented in the restaurants. And there is a Max Brenner chocolate cafe...

“An alternative lifestyle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2013

For as long as I have been in Sydney, Newtown has always beeen the "next coming suburb".
Not sure that the locals really want that, its appeal is that it offers an alternative life style to more conservative and modern suburbs - it's avoided the big department and franchise stores and retained the myriad of smaller stores and fun cafes.
Not sure I would compare it to Greenwich Village but it's a fun place if you want something different.

“Interesting shops”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

You can find some really good stuff in Newtown if you're willing to put in the legwork. Vintage to Funky - it's all there. Good cafe's all along King Street. However - a note to council... spend some $$$$ on making the area look nicer - it's looking drab, dirty & tired.

“Newtown is worth a visit :)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

Newtown is such a cool place. King Street is the main drag and the city end is where you want to be.
From the Newtown Hotel down the road all the way to the Union Hotel.
Lots of great pubs, bars and restaurants and take aways.
There is something for everyone and any occasion :)
