This is on top of my "bucket list" of things to do in Sydney and it does not disappoint. We booked the twilight climb and it is worth the extra money. After the usual 45 minutes of prep time, we began the climb at around 6pm, reached the sunset right after sunset and were greeted with an awesome night time view of Sydney CBD on the descend.
There are two paths, the most popular being the one via the upper arch. With this path, you walk through a series of catwalks underneath the bridge, through the pylon, after which you would climb through 4 sets of ladders to reach the upper arch. From this point, you will slowly ascend to the top of the summit. You then descend down the other side, through the ladders, through the pylon, back to the base. You spend a little over 2 hours on the bridge. This path is not as strenuous as it might originally seem, the biggest elevation change being the 4 sets of ladders that take you from the bottom of the road deck to the top of the upper arch.
Throughout the whole time on the bridge, you are attached to the bridge with a wire system. And to ensure the safety of cars traveling on the bridge, you are not allowed to bring anything that is not attachable to the jumpsuit they provide. So, no cameras allowed. There are 5 spots where the guide will take photos of you and your entire group. A group photo is included with the price of the climb, and you can purchase more.
Our guide Nat is great, enthusiastic and knowledgeable.
