We were recommended to stay near the Rocks in Sydney and were definitely pleased that we did. It's definitely the best location as it's so near to the two main iconic landmarks, the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. We chose the Russell because it was much better value than most other places near it.

The hotel itself is pretty tired and the only room we could get unfortunately had a shared bathroom. It was also extremely noisy and somewhere you should definitely take ear plugs. However, it was clean and the products in the bathrooms were Molton Brown (with the exception of the shower gel which was pretending to be Molton Brown).

You get a continental breakfast thrown in and the Russell bar and restaurant is really nice. The breakfast was simple but good quality.

We would go back just for the location.

I stayed here for a week in one of the shared bathroom rooms and it worked out much better than expected. Depending upon your perspective, some would find the room's decor outdated; I found it charming and full of character. At night, it was pleasant to come back to flowers in the room and a chocolate on the pillow. The double bed was very comfortable and the room was clean. A coffee maker was provided in the room as well as an ironing board. The room I stayed in was located in the back of the hotel so it was much quieter than if it was facing George St., a very noisy street particularly on weekends. The rooms was on the small side so it was nice to have the option of going to the sitting room area or rooftop patio. Both were a bit noisy since they faced George St. but I was able to filter it out after a while.

The staff was very friendly and helpful with suggestions. Wifi is available for $5 a day or there is a pc in the reception area that is available for free. The breakfast was basic - a typical continental style - yogurt, fresh fruit, bread, hard boiled eggs, coffee and juices. I prefer a stronger coffee so I was glad to go to a Starbucks close by.

For location, this is perfect. It is situated in the center of the Rocks and is walking distance to Circular Quay, the Opera House, Botanical Gardens and Harbor Bridge.

If you are looking for a sterile room of the modern hotel, this is not for you but if you like a feeling of the past without all the modern amenities, you should consider staying here.

Room Tip: For quiet, chose a room in the back of the hotel.

We had three nights in Sydney staying at the Russell, location is perfect, 2 minutes to Circular Quay which makes it so easy to get to from the airport. Staff were welcoming and very helpful for the duration of our stay. Robyn in particular was really helpful.
The Hotel has so much character as it is in the historical Rocks district , rooms are clean and are decorated in keeping with the age and style of the hotel, fresh flowers in the rooms are a nice touch, as are the chocolate deliveries each night.
Can highly recommend having a meal in the wine bar down stairs, the sharing menu is wonderful and don't dare miss the ham hock fritters, superb!
An excellent Hotel and would not hesitate to stay there again.

If all you are interested in is location, this is the small hotel for you. We were able to get a deluxe ensuite room for two nights, at a very reasonable price. However, I would agree with others that the breakfast is barely adequate, the floors creak loudly, and the ups and downs and narrow hallways make moving your luggage a real drag. Robin at reception was a charm, and had several good recommendations. Don't miss the free Rocks museum.
We did eat in the wine bar one night, and found it a happening place, with well priced food and drink.

We stayed three nights and found it exceptionally well - located as we caught train to/from airport. This was an opportunity to show a Canadian visitor Sydney and thehotel was a great starting point for each day's activities.

The room was clean and well - supplied but backed onto a linen cupboard and the creaks were loud as the building shifted? people walked around. But it's a conglomeration of old buildings so...

We enjoyed the two breakfasts but missed the last to catch early planes. Enjoyed a drink and cheese platter one night and ate at the restaurant upstairs another night.

Staff were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Check for specials and room sizes/locations. Some are small. You might want to avoid rooms accessed...

I stayed for two nights with my two children. The hotel was perfectly adequate. Our room was lovely and relatively quiet. The sitting area is a real gem. I looked into some other rooms (especially the single ones in the corridor leading to reception) and would never stay in them. One would hear every step on the creaky floorboards and they are really very small. The lighting in the room is poor and they seem to have left behind a redundant window pane (other reviewers have noticed this). The breakfast was just OK. Much better if they offer a no-breakfast rate and give guests the option of having fabulous coffee and croissants at la Renaissance around the corner. Finally, this is another hotel that extorts money for wifi. That practice is becoming very old-fashioned and I am guessing people won't put up with it for too much longer. I urge other Tripadvisor reviewers to always include a mention of wifi policies as this can be a significant extra and hidden cost.

Thank you for your review, we really appreciate your feedback and glad you enjoyed your room. Please note that the redundant window pane is double glazing which can be fitted on to the window to keep noise out. We apologise that this was not explained on arrival. We have found that $5 for 24 hours for wifi is considered quite reasonable and we also offer complimentary access to the laptop in reception. We are glad you had a chance to look around the hotel so that you know which rooms are suitable for you as we do have some very small rooms!

A very nice little hotel with plenty of character but still simple, clean and with all the basic needs covered. Wi-fi was at an extra of $5 for 24 hours. Breakfast was mostly continental except for boiled eggs as the only cooked item. Staff were very nice and helpful and delivered a chocolate every evening! The location was ideal, and was the whole point of this hotel, as tariffs in most of the others in this perfectly-placed area were sky-high. We were in a Superior Room with en-suite. The double bed was very comfortable and the room was clean. The bathroom smallish but adequately equipped. We spent two nights there and we would certainly recommend it to our friends and family.
