Fort Denison is a wonderful part of Sydney Harbour history. Easy access by ferry or water taxi from Circular Quay the self guided tour has great information boards that explain both the indigenous and colonial history of the island. Be there for the 1.00pm cannon firing, it's great.

The tour of Fort Denison with the NPWS was informative and took you in to the 3 levels of the tour which you wouldn't otherwise see. The ranger knew her stuff and was very flexible to suit the small group.
The information available on the arrangements for the tour though is very poor- needs to be clearer about when and how you get the ferry service over to meet a specific tour time.
Captain Cook cruises didn't have enough ferries operating to get back. Wasn't allowed on the one we were waiting for as the ferry was too full and had to wait 40 mins for the next one.

After a three week holiday in Australia my wife and I were looking for a very special place to celebrate what a special holiday we had had with our three adult children and our son's girlfriend. We picked Fort Denison almost by chance. What an inspired and wonderful choice this turned out to be. The island is just a few minutes boat ride from Circular Quay and has stunning views of the Opera House and the Bridge. In itself the island is a haven and is seeped in history - there is a even short guided tour with a One o'clock cannon firing............but the lunch is the real treat.

Crisp white tablecloths, very friendly staff and superb food and fine wines. The choice of seafood was exceptional and we enjoyed one of the most delicious meals I can ever remember. Because the restaurant is unique I think every group or party of guests was celebrating something special so the atmosphere was just wonderful - a steady clinking of glasses and the sound of happy contenedt people all around.

The whole setting was glorious with a beautifully sunny aspect (make sure you choose a table by the sea wall) and we have wonderful photos and memories locked.

Fort Denison is a MUST visit place in Sydney - I don't think I can't think of a better place in the world for a long, lazy, happy and very wonderful lunch.

Took the Captain Cook Cruise out to the fort for the time slot at 10:45. Got to island for a paid guided tour for 11:15. Got to the island with 5 other visitors. We all took the tour. Tour is 1/2 hour and should end 11:45 so we can catch the next departure off the island at 11:50. Tour started late so by 11:45 we were still up in the tower. We missed the 11:50 departure and next boat off the island is 1:20. You can get off earlier only if you have the hop on hop off ticket with Captain Cook Cruises. We tried to upgrade our ticket so we could get to the next stop without having to wait till 1:20 but the Captain Cook Cruises said no we had to do this back at the quay which we could not get back to until 1:20. SO WE were stuck on the island for 1 1/2 hours all because the tour was five minutes late. There is a restaurant but they were rather snooty and esp if you do not have a reservation. One member of our stranded group asked about eating there once we found out we were stranded and he was given the cold shoulder. The fort tour guide had to go talk to the restaurant. The fort is interesting but watch your timing or you may be stuck longer than you want to.

Surprisingly the view and the food rivalled each other. We had a lovely day with a short trip across the harbour to Fort Denison to have lunch. The maitre de was just lovely... witty and cheeky but good fun! We had 3 courses and wine n coffee in a relaxing environment enjoying views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge n eating beautiful and interesting food. A great day out.
