My country doesn't have a long history like Europe but this is one Australian landmark that is worth the visit. You need to book in advance as there are limited numbers and you get there with a special ticket onboard one of the manly ferries in the morning and then picked up after lunch. In the early days of Sydney, this island located in the middle of Sydney Harbour was a defence post, it was and still does fire a cannon to signal the time each day whilst there having lunch and learning the history of this landmark. Lunch was good but a bit of a restricted menu cause they have to feed you take you on a tour and then get you back off the island ... but it is well worth it and would highly recommend it !

A guided tour of Pinchgut will tell the visitor a lot about early colonial history. The Martello tower is well-preserved.

Even though it's a bit expensive, take the tour of Fort Denison, as you'll get SO much more information from the knowledgeable guides. Going inside the tower was the highlight, and you can't do this unless you take the tour. Just remember that part of the money goes towards the upkeep of the island. Don't miss the 1pm firing of the canon. Lots of fun for history buffs!

We took the ferry an hour before our tour so that we could have a look around the island before the tour. There's also a grassed area where you could have a picnic on a quiet day, or the cafe/restaurant if you have deep pockets!

My cousin and I flew up to Sydney from Melbourne for a day and didn't know what to do. Eventually we came up with the idea of "visiting that island with the fort you always pass on the ferry". What a great choice!

I pre-booked the the tour through the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service and recieved the tickets by email. All we had to do was show up at Circular Quay to pick up our ferry ticket on time.

Met at the ferry wharf on the island by the tour guide we were soon on our way around the island. The guide was a lovely lady who was full of knowledge and passionate about the history of the island. We were shown all the inner workings of the fort and given an idea of what life was like for those that lived and worked at Fort Dennison.

As others have said it's one of those places that you always pass but never visit. I'm so glad we visited. I'm sure anyone who has visited (or even lives in) Sydney has wondered about this funny little island.

The cost of the tour from memory was $35 per person which included the ferry ride over and back.
