Manly/Bondi, everyone does these, but they are a bit tacky. Personally i prefer the northern beaches near Mona Vale, north of Manly. They are spectacular&not nearly so busy. If staying in the city, the L90 bus from Central Station will get you all the way to beautiful Palm Beach&others on the way. Pre-pay before you board, though. If you are lucky enough to know a northern beaches local, get them to drive you to the "Bible Garden" - funny name/gorgeous lookout over Palm Beach. Wow.

The quayside a syou arrive on the ferry is a pleasant enough spot on its own, with restaurants and bars. The walk uphill towards the promenade is quite pleasant with a variety of shops.
The promenade is stunning, a wide walkway with plenty of picnic tables and great views of the bay. The beach is wonderful and the sea is perfect for surfing. Just off the promenade in a road parallel to the main street is a superb fish and chip shop. Select you fish or other sea food from the fantastic display of fresh produce and the wait a few minutes while it is cooked for you, then retire to a picnic table on the promenade and perhaps follow up with an excellent ice-cream from the sea front parlour, wonderful

It's actually part of three beaches forming one continuous stretch of golden sand and rolling, but not dangerous, surf. Reached by visitors travelling on the Manly Ferry, the shops fronting the Corso, the main street leading from the Harbour to the beach, can be tacky tourist traps, but the beach itself is clean, fresh and user-friendly.

Took the Manly Ferry across to Manly Beach. Good 30min trip over. Fortunate enough to see Whales on our trip across. Had good coffee at Gloria Jeans on arrival, wandered down to Manly Beach through the boulevarde of shops. Grat afternoon out
